John McLaughlin Announces Farewell Tour Dates - with Jimmy Herring - Celebrating Mahavishnu Orchestra

JOHN MCLAUGHLIN & JIMMY HERRING

"THE MEETING OF THE SPIRITS" - TOUR DATES ANNOUNCED

November - December 2017

GUITARIST JOHN MCLAUGHLIN REVISITS THE LEGACY OF
MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA ON HIS FAREWELL U.S. TOUR WITH GUITARIST JIMMY HERRING

(Los Angeles, CA) January 31, 2017 --- In a career that spans over five decades, John McLaughlin, one of music's most influential and prolific guitarists, composers, and bandleaders, will begin his farewell U.S. tour on November 1 in Buffalo, NY.  McLaughlin will be joined by Jimmy Herring, who has been in the creative forefront of the American rock-jam movement for 25 years.  The Meeting of the Spirits tour will hit 23 cities before ending in Los Angeles on December 9.

Highlighting this musical adventure will be John McLaughlin revisiting the pioneering music he introduced with his genre-defying Mahavishnu Orchestra. In addition, McLaughlin is expected to release a new album just before the tour launches.  More details to be announced.

McLaughlin's first extensive U.S. tour in seven years, The Meeting of the Spirits also marks his first extended exploration of the Mahavishnu Orchestra material from seminal albums such as Inner Mounting Flame, Birds of Fire, Between Nothingness and Eternity, Visions of the Emerald Beyond and more since the band's original heyday in the 1970s.

Jimmy Herring, best known for his inspired contributions to the Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Allman Brothers, Widespread Panic, The Dead, and others, will be co-headlining each show with his new band 'The Invisible Whip,' comprised of  Jeff Sipe-Apt Q258 (drums), Matt Slocum (B3 and Clavinet), Jason Crosby (Fender Rhodes, Wurlitzer) and Kevin Scott (bass).

On The Meeting of the Spirits tour, separate sets by Herring and McLaughlin will be followed by the two joining forces for an expansive closing jam based on classic Mahavishnu Orchestra material. The tour will feature the first extended collaborations between two of world's foremost guitarists.  McLaughlin will be backed by his current band, the 4th Dimension – Ranjit Barot (drums), Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), and Etienne M'Bappé (bass) – each an established composer and recording artist in his own right.  Expect special surprise guests to be added when available.

Rock Music Legend John Wetton Dies (12th June 1949 – 31st January 2017)

Rock music legend John Wetton sadly passed away in the early hours of this morning, Tuesday 31st January 2017, after a long and courageous battle against colon cancer.

John rose to fame with King Crimson in the early 70s during the iconic Red era and later formed the band UK. In the early 1980s he was a founder member of supergroup ASIA which was his biggest commercial success. The band's 1982 self-titled debut album was the biggest selling album in the world that year and gave fans and mainstream radio the mega-hit Heat of the Moment.

John also enjoyed a successful solo career, including the seminal album Battle Lines, and formed iCon with ASIA bandmate Geoff Downes. In 2006 the original line-up of ASIA reformed and toured the world several times to promote four new studio albums.

John had been planning to tour with ASIA for the band's forthcoming US arena tour with Journey and following the success of his solo Studio Recordings Anthology, to continue working on the ongoing re-issue programme of his solo albums, via his own Primary Purpose label.

John valued his over 11 years of sobriety and volunteered time in fellowship with other alcoholics to share his experience, strength and hope with them. John is survived by his recently wed wife Lisa and 18 year old son Dylan, brother Robert and mother Peggy.

The very last studio song of John Wetton's career was the closing track on the most recent and indeed final ASIA album "Gravitas" and included the profound lyrics "Think the best of me, till we meet again."

A statement by Geoff Downes:

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart, that I have to report we have lost my dearest friend, brother, bandmate and long term musical collaborator, John Wetton, who has passed away after a long and tenacious battle with cancer. He will be remembered as one of the world's finest musical talents, and I for one of many was wholly blessed by his influence. It was a massive privilege for me to have worked with this genius so closely on our numerous projects together over the years. His bass playing was revolutionary. His voice was from the gods. His compositions - out of this world. His sense of melody and harmony - unreal. He was literally a 'special one'.

But John was much more than a gigantic and unique musical talent. He was a supremely intelligent man, marked with his great observations and wisdom about life; all couched within his wicked sense of humour. The wit was dark and deep, only fully perceptible to those on his same wavelength. I was fortunate enough to be able to be on that wavelength, and discover that we had much in common. Many of his personal life experiences were reflected in his lyrical contributions to the songs. His heart was always in the music. That was John, through and through. It was always about - the music.

As a person, he was fiercely loyal, loving and generous, particularly to those he cared about. But he could be as stubborn as a mule or as gracious as a nobleman, depending on the mood that grabbed him on any particular day. There were some who couldn't read his brilliant mind and complex personality. Some found him charming, others infuriating. But however you found John, there was no denying his rare talent as a musician and songwriter was second to none.

Both of us having been brought up with similar backgrounds in provincial England, we shared a love of many things - sport, and in particular - football, English church music, current affairs, comedy, literature, you name it....pretty much everything that 2 kids from the sticks were exposed to in our youth.

Our planets seemed to be immediately in alignment when we first met in early 1981. There was a laddish camaraderie that grew between us as we became as close as two non-related brothers could be. He was an avid reader and film enthusiast, something he pursued with great interest. This helped inspire him to some wonderful lyrics to the literally hundreds of songs we composed together. Back then, we immediately hit the ground running as we composed much of the debut ASIA album together and forged a formidable partnership which lasted right up until now. It was a wholly natural process for us, whereby we could knock out 2 or 3 songs in an afternoon. They were always greeted with our gentlemanly handshake and smiles once we had wrapped up another one in the bag.

Above all else though, his passion for life was to the fore. The battles he endured throughout were immense and well documented. Firstly with alcohol, which he so resolutely overcame, then open heart surgery and finally cancer, which sadly was to take his life in the end. He once observed to me that this disease is a "merciless assassin". Just another example of his perception and the descriptive language that he was so richly blessed with. He took all of these battles on board with great bravery and almost a 'laissez-faire' attitude, tinged with his inimitable wry wit.

To say I will miss my him greatly is beyond understatement. He was such an inspiration to me. We were planning another album, but sadly he was not well enough to complete it. I feel heartbroken about this, as I knew John thought it was to be one of our finest albums to date. I remain as proud as ever of our Wetton/Downes writing partnership. I am hoping one day that I will be able to finish it, and that it will be appreciated by all those who loved his and our music, and most importantly, a legacy he would have been proud of.

Life will not be the same without him. And words are not really enough to describe the loss I feel right now, and the many friends and fans all over the World will also be feeling. It is the end of an era for all of us. But we will soldier on - the music of John Wetton needs to be heard loud and clear from the rooftops.

Dearest John, may you rest in peace brother.

X

Geoffrey

Please join me in sending our sincerest thoughts and prayers to Lisa, Dylan and the entire Wetton family at this difficult time.

A statement by Carl Palmer:

With the passing of my good friend and musical collaborator, John Wetton, the world loses yet another musical giant. John was a gentle person who created some of the most lasting melodies and lyrics in modern popular music. As a musician, he was both brave and innovative, with a voice that took the music of ASIA to the top of the charts around the world. His ability to triumph over alcohol abuse made him an inspiration to many who have also fought that battle.  For those of us who knew him and worked with him, his valiant struggle against cancer was a further inspiration. I will miss his talent, his sense of humor and his infectious smile. May you ride easy, my old friend.
Carl Palmer.

Concrete Jelly and their new album Getting Noticed

Italian hard rock band Concrete Jellÿ (yep, that's a funky "ÿ" going on – not a mistake) were founded in 2014 in Trieste. The forthcoming album Getting Noticed was recorded live in the summer of 2016 and the inspiration for the story-line came from the many good (and bad) things experienced during their relentless live activity both offstage and on. The sound of the album is the result of the different influences within the band members, ranging from the spaciness of 70's rock to prog rock and everything good in between. In the end, Concrete Jellÿ are just a bunch of friends, who like to have fun and take nothing too seriously. At least nothing except the music!

HAKEN - launch remastered version of 'Streams'; look back on Aquarius

On February 3rd, 2017, London-based progressive metal band HAKEN will release their first two albums "Aquarius" and "Visions" as new remastered 2CD editions as well as on vinyl for the very first time.
They are now pleased to reveal a stream of the remastered version of 'Streams' taken from 'Aquarius': https://youtu.be/B3WAxBI1CBc

The first in a series of interviews with the band looking back on their first two albums and 10 years as a band has also now been launched.
Watch guitarists Rich Henshall and Charlie Griffiths talk about 'Aqaurius' here: https://youtu.be/8sejqgzkuFU

Vocalist Ross Jennings commented on the releases: "As advocates of the physical format and fellow record collectors, it seems almost criminal that our first two albums have never had a vinyl release until now, so we are thrilled to finally give these albums a fresh presentation on the format they deserve. We have taken this opportunity to polish the sound of our beloved concept albums without going back over every little detail and rewriting history. In essence we wanted to give these albums a chance to stand shoulder to shoulder in sonic quality with "The Mountain" and "Affinity". In addition to this and due to popular demand, both releases will also be available again on CD with instrumental, or "Karaoke" versions of every track. This release marks 10 years since we formed the band and started putting together our first demos so it's a perfect time to reflect on these releases and appreciate what we've achieved so far.

The "Aquarius" concept was drawn from conversations about our favourite albums and the way in which the songs flow that make those particular records work. This lead to ideas about having our album be about the flow or journey of water from mountain spring to oceans and evaporation, which in turn lead on to a deeper concept about human life and reincarnation. The themes of water helped us to create aqueous soundscapes and as the music and lyrics started coming together a narrative was formed in the shape of Mermaids & natural disasters. "Aquarius" will always have a special place in our hearts. It's where our journey really began.

When writing for "Visions" came around, we set about the process with the same formula, although we hadn't set out to write another concept album at the time. As themes found themselves recurring in the music it only felt right to go in the narrative direction, although this time around we drew from our science fiction influences such as Minority Report and 12 Monkeys and was inspired by real recurring dreams I had been having around the time. It's always a joy to revisit these tracks in our live sets, so much so that we will be performing it in its entirety later this year at ProgPower USA, Atlanta!"

Newly remastered by the renowned Jens Bogren (Devin Townsend Project, Between the Buried & Me) both are available as 2CD Digipaks, digital album including the entire albums as instrumentals, and on vinyl, arriving as Gatefold heavyweight 2LP editions with the full album on CD included.

ART BAND and their new album Planet Zero

ART is an Italian melodic rock band based in Bologna, which marks its appearance in 2016 with 9 original songs constituting their first album PLANET ZER0.

This long awaited production is the fruitful intuition keyboardist Enrico Lorenzini had three years ago, putting together five skilled musicians, who share strong personalities and life-long experience of thousand stages across Italy.

90ís Whitesnake hard rock can be heard in Denis Borgatti warm vocal harmonies, and some David Paich languid pianos as well, while Enrico Lorenzini cutting lead keyboard shynths recall Claudio Simonetti pristine sounds, and 70s PFM, Deep Purple, and Marillion prog-influenced longer suites. 80ís Billy Idol and Toto pop-rock songwriting is echoed in Roberto Minozzi guitar work, and the thick and effective bass lines brought by Diego Quarantotto add compactness to the sound, perfectly paired by Fabio Tomba extremely precise drumming, reminding Porcaro ís early grooves.

In these nine songs they manage to blend all their inspirations and taste into a perfect summa of all this, creating a passionate, poetic, intimate, tasteful and organic blend which sounds fresh, yet so experienced. Planet ZerO is the starting point, at the very end, of an emotional journey, through life, both interior, as intimate as emotions are, and exterior, as the ever returning cycle of life-love-death is, for all mankind ñ thus the name of the album.

Sons Of Revolution their debut album Sons Of Revolution

Sons of Revolution is a four-piece rock blues band, formed in 2013, in the center of Italy, by Mario Alessiani (guitar), Paolo Ceritano (voice), Davide Coccagna (bass) and Romolo Di Gregorio (drums). Initially the idea was to revive the traditional blues with a modern sound and rock attitude and this fully reflects the first single "Evil". By recording our first EP we added new shades. Someone says grunge, someone else progressive, certainly not a simple blues standards but something more elaborate and full of contaminations. Our First album "Sons of Revolution", produced by Umberto Palazzo (Santo Niente/Massimo Volume), recorded by Sergio Pomante at NoiseLab Studio, mastered by Domenico Pulsinelli is out in February 2017 for Sliptrick Records.

Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991:

I've never finished it over the years until now, because of technology problems (computer not fast enough to mix - midi & sync problems, & not enough track space to do overdubs etc!) but I always liked the compositional approach to the drum parts! I look at it as a missing link between guitarshop, and melodic drumming & the ostinato! The period after recording the drums included doing the lonely bears & polytown & changing to Mapex, then DW as well.

I have a new track to release. It's called "Advent". It's the first in the Terry Bozzio Solo Project 1991 series. I went into Jeff Burton's garage studio (he is the son of Elvis Presley's famous guitarist James Burton!), with Missing Persons' Live Sound Engineer (who has been my dear friend from the very beginning of that band), Gary Epstein. We recorded my drums on Jeff's 16 track 2" machine.

We managed to get 9-10 tracks down with a beatbox for a hybrid sound. With no idea of what it would ultimately be, I tried to improvise composed beats along with the beat box and create different sections, based on what felt was natural to do next. I had the concept of overdubbing the music on it later.

One thing we tried right away was to float in some vocal stuff I had done with Patrick O'Hearn in his studio at previous session a year before. The result was very good and inspired me to do more with other previous recordings. At that time I was living near Jeff in Studio City and had converted my garage into a little studio too. I called it White Rooms. I had a 3M 79 16 track 2" machine (bought from Gary Wright!) as well, & some early midi equipment and started to drag the midi overdubs via a sync tone from the 3M. A very slow and tedious process at the time!

But the magic was that 2 of my previously recorded vocal tracks, just done in free space up in Oregon w/ Pat, using my vocoder, synced up unconsciously, but perfectly with 2 of the drum track's structures! So it was meant to be.

I'm still not finished with all the tracks, but I have 4 almost ready to go, & coming soon! This is the first and it's called "Advent". It means "a coming". Burning drums, Bulgarian Folk Singing, and driving sequencer parts. I hope you like it!

RIVERSIDE - Announce "Towards The Blue Horizon" Tour 2017!

After recently announcing two special and by now completely sold out comeback tribute shows in the band's hometown of Warsaw, Poland for February, Progressive Rock masters RIVERSIDE are delighted to announce a next European tour for April/May 2017.

The band checked in with the following comment:

"2017 must be a better year. And we have to come back to life. But we won't, unless we come back to the stage... so it is our great pleasure to inform you that Riverside will go back to playing live this year.
After two very special evenings in February, which, for obvious reasons, are going to be unique and one of a kind, we have planned two legs of a special "Towards the Blue Horizon Tour". The first one will begin in April and May. The second one will start in the autumn and we'll visit more European countries.
During "Towards the Blue Horizon Tour" we will play in a new live line-up with a guest guitarist who will make our music sound the way it should, not only because he's a great musician but, most of all, because he's got the kind of modesty and humility about him which has always been very important to us on stage. Additionally, we're going to present a lot of compositions which we have not played live before. Our concerts will also be filled with emotions we haven't felt before. Together with you, we want to dive into this and make each composition sound more mighty than ever.
We're becoming a different band, more mature, more serious, more experienced. Piotr is gone, but he will always be with us and we are still a live band. Which we're going to prove soon during our "Towards the Blue Horizon Tour". Remember, "This is not the end, this is not the time."

DAN HICKS Greatest Licks - Surfdog Records Pays Tribute to Dan Hicks with Album Out February 24th

SURFDOG RECORDS PAYS TRIBUTE TO DAN HICKS

GREATEST LICKS – I FEEL LIKE SINGIN'

SET FOR RELEASE ON FEBRUARY 24, 2017

"Dan Hicks is fly, sly, wily and dry!" – TOM WAITS

(Encinitas, CA – January 19, 2017)  "Dan Hicks is an American Treasure," so says Elvis Costello and perhaps half of the music world who worshiped Dan and his timeless tunes.  Dan Hicks created a pioneering blend of hipster jazz, gypsy swing and country that still resonates as strongly today as it did when Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks came roaring onto the scene with their unique, genre-bending sound in the late '60s -- when rock was getting louder, Dan threw it back to a simpler time.

As we mark the first anniversary of his passing (February 6th) Surfdog Records is paying tribute to the legend of Dan Hicks with a compilation album in celebration of his life and legacy.  Greatest Licks – I Feel Like Singin' is set for vinyl & CD release, as well as digital, on February 24, 2017 with pre-orders available now.

Since the beginning, Hicks deftly blended elements of multiple American musical art forms to create a sound that the New York Times calls "defiantly unfashionable, proudly eccentric & foot-tappingly catchy."  His lyrics range from the simply sublime to the sublimely ridiculous, all presented with his uniquely skewed and inscrutable touch.  Songs like "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?," as described again by the Times, "display his dry and often absurd wit, as did his gently self-mocking stage presence."  But Hicks had his serious side as well; "I Scare Myself", described as "a longtime staple of his repertoire, was a brooding, hypnotic ballad about being afraid to love."  Hicks' irresistible sense of rhythm, hip lyrical styling, laid back vocalizing, and infamous on-stage wit lasted well through his final recordings on Surfdog.

Dan was revered by his musical peers, never following the status quo.  As friend & famed producer Tommy LiPuma put it, "Dan was short on bullshit, and long on talent."  Featuring 11 classic Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks songs (the CD & digital versions contain a 12th bonus track), this amazing anthology from one of music's true originals, showcases Hicks' musical genius and encapsulates his unparalleled career.

"On my dying day I will explain to the world how lucky they have been to be alive the same time as me."    – Dan Hicks, 2013

After studying classical violin at the Paris Conservatory, Jean Luc Ponty turned to jazz in the 60's. Thanks to his revolutionary style he collaborated with some of the best European and American musicians such as Eddy Louiss, Daniel Humair, Niels Henning-Ørsted Pedersen, John Lewis, Lalo Schifrin, and Quincy Jones. He became the first bebop violinist and US jazz magazine "Down Beat" created a violin category for him in its critics' poll, until then violin was in the 'miscellaneous instruments' category. His pioneering work on the electric violin in the 70's attracted the attention of pop and rock musicians, he recorded with Elton John and participated to several tours and legendary recordings with Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention and John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. In 1975 he founded his own band and became one of the most prominent figures of the jazz-fusion movement in the USA, selling millions of albums that all reached the top of the US charts. Ponty's most recent album "The Atacama Experience" is considered as one if his best and to this day Ponty keeps touring with his band around the world.

Ponty also collaborates on occasional projects such as "The Rite of Strings" with Stanley Clarke and Al Di Meola. In 2011 Ponty joined the mythical American group RETURN TO FOREVER IV with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White and Frank Gambale for a world tour spanning on 5 continents.

Ponty received the 2007 Jazz Trophy in Germany, the medal of Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in France in 2009, the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Awards in Ireland, and the Grand Prix of the Sochi Arts Festival in 2012 in Russia from the hands of world famous classical violist and orchestra conductor Yuri Bashmet. In 2012 Ponty performed his music with Orchestre Pasdeloup for his 50-year career celebration at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, then again with symphony orchestras in Brazil, Russia and Hungary in 2012 and 2013.

In April 2013 Herbie Hancock invited him to perform in Istanbul at "International Jazz Day" for UNESCO. Ponty also founded a new quartet with his daughter, pianist-singer-composer Clara Ponty which performed in France and Germany in 2014. Ponty also performed with the 89 musicians of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orcherstra for the Siberian Christmas Festival.

In 2014 Ponty recorded an album as an acoustic trio with Stanley Clarke on double bass and Gypsy-French guitarist Bireli Lagrene, which was released on Impulse/Universal in the Fall 2015.

Jean Luc recently formed the Anderson Ponty Band with Jon Anderson, co-founder and lead singer of British progressive rock band YES, a CD and DVD was released in 2015 followed by a North American concert tour.

RADIO MOSCOW Signs Worldwide Deal with Century Media Records

Southern Californian rock trio RADIO MOSCOW and CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS are proud to announce a worldwide partnership to release the band's upcoming albums. RADIO MOSCOW already started songwriting and will enter the studio soon to release their fifth full length album in late summer 2017.

Guitarist and vocalist Parker Griggs comments: "Radio Moscow couldn't be more stoked to be joining the Century Media family! When we met these guys we spent hours nerding out on obscure classics from our favorite era of Rock 'n' Roll (1965-1974).... so we feel right at home! Excited to keep writing and working on the next Radio Moscow release on Century Media. Looking forward to 2017 with a new label and album! Peace n Love!"

Jens Prueter, Head of A&R at Century Media Europe adds: "A beautiful summer night at a club in the middle of Germany, some beers, a nice chat about weird 60s stuff and an amazing sweaty show: that's a good start for a long time partnership. I'm very happy to welcome this highly talented band that is taking the roots to the roof!"
Trends come and go, but the idea of a bunch of guys getting together in a garage and playing the kind of music that makes the neighbors call the cops - that's forever. And it's that idea that's crystallized in the form of Radio Moscow who took their name from an obscure 60s garage punk novelty single. The power trio led by the Stratocaster genius Parker Griggs have found THE formula: Crunching, heavy Sabbath-style chords topped with fiery solos that earn the right to be called Hendrixian. Radio Moscow plants their flag firmly in the territory where psychedelic rock and cranked-up blues meet. The sound is unabashedly retro (think Cream, Blue Cheer, Led Zep or Jimi Hendrix Experience), so it's easy to see how it caught the ear of the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, who produced Radio Moscow's 2007 self-titled debut.

With "Brain Cycles", their second album, Radio Moscow proves that they're not a cheap time machine but a direct descendant from the golden age of Rock 'n' Roll. In 2011, Griggs continued his psychedelic trip with "The Great Escape of Leslie Magnafuzz" followed by "Magical Dirt" in 2014.
Parker Griggs (vocals, guitar), Anthony Meier (bass) and Paul Marrone (drums) hit the road hard in the U.S. and in Europe, touring with the likes of Graveyard, Witchcraft, Joe Bonamassa and Pentagram, followed by an appearance on the legendary German television program Rockpalast.

Coming off of what seems like endless touring proceeding and following the recording of the double-live gatefold "Live! In California", Radio Moscow is ready to hit the studio again. "Live!..." was recorded absolutely live with no overdubs of any kind; New York Music Daily called it the Best Heavy Psych LP of 2016, proclaiming "there's nothing that's been released in 2016 that can touch this."

The band toured the U.S., Europe, South America, and Australia around the release of the live document, landing at such festivals as Desert Daze (US), the Void Fest (Ger), Electric Funeral (US), Burg Herzberg Fest (Ger), and the Orbital Festival in Santiago, Chile, to name a few.

The live album wrapped up the first chapter of the band's career, playing highlights from their first four studio albums. As Rolling Stone's Dave DiMartino cited, "I would be lying if I did not say I have been completely taken with this...The band actively evokes all that was great about hard-rock trios, but does it with such gleeful abandon you've got to admire both their spirit and whatever time capsule they rode in on. Great fun."
The story continues with a new chapter in 2017.
