Music Legend Todd Rundgren's Notre Dame Artist in Residence Mini-Documentary



Rundgren started his Spirit of Harmony Foundation a few years ago to help bring music back into schools - http://spiritofharmony.org. A few months ago he accepted an invitation from Notre Dame University to conduct a week-long Artist In Residence music program, on the condition that it highlight the Foundation.

Notre Dame just completed the following mini-documentary on his week on campus (and off campus):

The iconic songwriter, recording artist, producer and innovator released his critically acclaimed new album "White Knight" on May 12 via Cleopatra Records. The 15-track collection features a dynamic range of original songs and deft studio work by Rundgren, with an impressive array of what he terms "collaborators", including Dam Funk, Donald Fagen, Daryl Hall, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, Bettye LaVette, Robyn, Joe Satriani, and Joe Walsh.

Elliott Murphy's New Album Prodigal Son

American Appearances on July 26 at Stony Brook Film Festival and August 1 at the Rockwood Music Hall

Elliott Murphy's thirty-fifth album - PRODIGAL SON - is now available in North America on CD and Vinyl LP (Traffic distribution) as well as on Amazon, iTunes, streaming sites and other online stores. PRODIGAL SON is also out in Europe where it has received rave reviews including the prestigious French cultural mag Telerama.

PRODIGAL SON is Elliott's first album of all new original songs in over three years and marks a daring step forward in both musical and lyrical terms from one of the most original and classic American rock singer-songwriters. Recorded in Paris' Question de Son Studio (where artists such as Kanye West and Beck have worked while in Paris) Elliott is backed by his long-time backing band The Normandy All Stars (Alan Fatras, Laurent Pardo and guitar virtuoso Olivier Durand). Sadly, Laurent Pardo passed away just after the album was completed - in Elliott's liner notes there is a heartfelt dedication.

PRODIGAL SON was produced, mixed and arranged by Elliott's son Gaspard Murphy, an up and coming producer in his own right (Superbus / Warner Music France). The album features "Leon Russell-styled" keyboard work by Leo Cotton and evocative violin playing by Australian Melissa Cox. PRODIGAL SON was conceived and written with the idea of incorporating a gospel choir and the blend of these majestically soaring voices along with Murphy's own on tracks such as "Wit's End" is monumental.

Highlights from PRODIGAL SON include the anthem "Chelsea Boots," the poignant love song "Let Me In," and the touching story of a young girls coming of age "Hey Little Sister." The album ends with Elliott Murphy's longest song to date "Absalom, Davy & Jacky O" – a virtual film noir within a song – that clocks in at just over eleven minutes.

PRODIGAL SON follows the release of the film THE SECOND ACT OF ELLIOTT MURPHY featuring interviews with Bruce Springsteen (who says of Elliott Murphy: I don't think he's ever written a bad song") and Billy Joel (who says "I thought he was good as soon as I saw him"). PRODIGAL SON will surely go down as one of the amazing highlights of a storied musical career that began with AQUASHOW. (1973).    

Elliott is available for interviews via SKYPE or email and also phoners.  He will be in the States, doing in-person interviews with the media on July 25-August 1. Along with THE SECOND ACT OF ELLIOTT MURPHY director Jorge Arenillas, he will make an appearance at the Stony Brook Film Festival on July 26 where the film will be shown. On Tuesday, August 1, Elliott performs an intimate solo show at New York City's Rockwood Music Hall.

Ghost Toast release their highly-anticipated 3rd album "Out Of This World"

Ghost Toast is an instrumental, experimental progressive rock band from Debrecen, Hungary, formed in 2008. They love heavy, trippy music and film scores as well, so they use these elements to create their own unique music.

The songs on Out Of This World are connected by a loose concept - a connection between fantasy and some mythological themes.

Ka Mai means a pawn of fate (see title of the last track) and refers to Stephen King's Dark Tower saga. It does not directly refer to the novels (though we believe that the mixed mood sets and theatrical elements match it very well), it's rather the words themselves and their meaning which grabbed us and suited the concept.

Gordius is the most complex item on the album, the name derives from this fact and human complexity, and this was the basic idea that the projected images shown in the video were applied on. 

Alia got the name from the character in Frank Herbert's Dune, the speech samples originate from the TV miniseries. She is a tragic character who turns into a monster, a severely troubled mind trapped in a little girl's body.

The Dragon's Tail is our first attempt to create a movie score without an actual movie behind it. The title is somewhat of a pun, but the dragon represents the world of fantasy into which the music tries to teleport the listener. 

Minotaur is a half-chill out, half-pounding song, this duality represented by the title also, perfect for a some labyrinth rambling.

Kaia is based on a sample from an American a capella singers' band called Kaia - it is a Finnish children's song ("Kaiababies"). The name Kaia also means "from the earth" or "pure" in Greek, and "sea" in Hawaiian. 

Last Man was inspired by the novel I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, and two movie adaptations (Last Man on Earth and Omega Man), the speech samples are from these movies as well. We tried to represent the dramatic mood of the story, gradually built up from beginning to end.

Ishvara is our first song which was basically created on demand. One of our friends' Indian dance group asked us to create a rather modern song - one that they can still perform their traditional dance moves on. Ishvara can mean supreme soul, ruler, lord, king, queen or husband, God, Supreme Being, personal god, or special self.

Pawn of Fate (one who has hope but no real choices) is the grand finale and farewell of the album, the background was already elaborated at the Ka Mai part.

Pictures From Nadira comes with their album Nadira



Pictures From Nadira is a 4-piece post-rock band from Munich, Germany. Coming from different musical backgrounds, they make music in this lineup since 2015 and share the urge to create a sound that is driven by emotions and atmosphere, music that let the audience escape into an unreal world. Besides post-rock, they make references to kraut- rock and noise.

 With sounds, endlessly in the space, that explodes in a massive supernova. Spheric soundscapes and huge wall of sounds are created by drums, bass and two guitars. Synths, strings and visual effects bring the sound to a whole new level. "In a galaxy, far away, there is a goddess who is summoned." Nadira is the name of that Goddess. Nadira, as an album, sounds moving post-rock that lets you fall deep into the world of "Nadira", the goddess, that is the beginning and the end of it all.

Euphoric layers, abstractedly harmonies, complex and melancholic sounds combined with impulsive arrangements of guitars, bass, drums and synths. The record was recorded live in two days and without overdubs in order to keep it alive and breathing. And also to encourage the listener to take the whole journey and enjoy the trip in it's entirety.

Anneke van Giersbergen's VUUR release first track off debut album




In 2016, renowned Dutch vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen announced the formation of a brand new progressive metal group under the name of VUUR. The band debuts 'Days Go By - London' with an album track video and digital release. This song is the first track taken from VUUR's debut album, which has yet to be named, due in the fall of this year.

Anneke comments: "The lyrical content of the album is inspired by the many cities I have visited while being on the road. The song 'Days Go By - London' is about The Great Fire in 1666. The lyrics are written from the perspective of the element of Fire, threatening Londoners to wipe them out, but the song is also about hope. Even in the darkest of times, the sun will rise."

SHYLOCK is a French progressive rock band that formed in the 1970's. The music became known for its instrumental richness and complexity, dark ambience, electric tension, and refined romanticism. Gialorgues and Ile de Fièvre became regarded as classic albums of the late-70s French progressive scene.

Most often compared to King Crimson, Pulsar and Arachnoid, SHYLOCK's influence can be felt in bands like Änglagård, Xaal, Tiemko, and Minimum Vital.

Thirty-three years after disbanding, the group reformed in 2012 to perform the music worldwide again for people who had never seen them on stage. ProgDay is honored to host SHYLOCK for its first US appearance.

David Torn is a composer, texturalist, guitarist, producer & whatnot of actual international stature, renowned for his unique musical voice which seems to span & un-define a range of idioms and styles. Tarquin composed and produced each of these tracks and displays his own guitar prowess alongside such world-class players as guitar icon Larry Coryell (his final recordings before his passing earlier this year), vocalist Phil Naro (Talas, Julian Lennon), Grammy jazz guitarist Mike Stern, fretless bass extraordinaire Tony Franklin (Jimmy Page/Blue Murder), Chris Poland (Megadeth), Hal Lindes (Dire Straits), Will Ray (The Hellecasters), jazz keyboardist Bobby Baldwin & Grammy nominee Denny Jiosa. Paradise Lost - 'Medusa' release date + album artwork + exclusive release show

For their 15th full-length record, the legends are returning to their early beginnings, delivering their heaviest album for 15 years; melding crushing doom metal with Nick Holmes' harsh death growls and raw organic sounds, heralding a new era of pure Northern misery.

The artwork was created by Branca Studio and shows the infamous Gorgone, Medusa, from Greek mythology, carrying venomous snakes as hair and turning everyone into stone who would dare to look into her eyes. Guitarist Greg Mackintosh contemplates about the artwork:

"Whilst we were writing »Medusa« and realising what the new songs were becoming, we had to find an artist to reflect this direction. After searching around for a while, I found Branca Studios. They have a keen eye for design and their modern take on retro artwork really fit the bill. What they have come up with is a blending of colourful yet retro styling, whilst maintaining the classic PARADISE LOST feel."

About the choice to make her the figurehead of this new album, singer Nick Holmes adds:

"I was intrigued about a greater meaning and thinking more along the lines of what Medusa represents metaphorically. Medusa as a title works in many ways. From a nihilist perspective, when I read the description of 'medusa' on the wikipedia page: 'Attempts to avoid looking into Medusa's eyes represents avoiding the ostensibly depressing reality that the universe is meaningless' - the title was pretty much in the bag!"

Bay Area Heavy Rockers, War Cloud, Sign to Ripple Music for New Album and Tour



Ripple Music is thrilled to welcome San Francisco Bay Area heavy rockers, War Cloud, to it's roster of the best of the modern heavy bands. 

Erupting in 2014, out of Oakland, California, War Cloud has been on a steady path of shredding Northern Californian ear drums. Founded by Alex Wein (vocals, guitars), who moved from Baltimore MD and wasted no time in recruiting area musicians after firmly planting his amps in the Bay Area. Looking to create an aural ash cloud of volcanic rock, Alex solidified this four- man crew with two Bay Area natives Joaquin Ridgell (drums) and Tony Campos (guitar), and secured the low end with Toronto transplant Carson Binx on bass.

War Cloud is a young band but far from wide-eyed innocents. Wetton/Downes' iCon Announces the Mainstream Release of “Urban Psalm” on 2CD/1DVD



London, UK – The collaboration of the ASIA co-founders, John Wetton and Geoff Downes' iCon, has led to the formation of Epicon Records (via Cherry Red) and its first release of "Urban Psalm" as a 2CD/1DVD set. The release was planned before John Wetton's death in January 2017 and is fully approved by Geoff Downes and the Wetton Estate.

The concert was filmed at the iconic St Mary-le-Bow church in London and features a unique set including iCon songs, heritage tracks and the greatest hits of ASIA. This release of "Urban Psalm" is the first in a series of definitive re-releases of the iCon catalogue.

The "Urban Psalm" recording also features Dave Kilminster (Roger Waters, Keith Emerson) on guitars, Pete Riley (whom John called "the best drummer in the world" and played with Keith Emerson alongside Dave), Panic Room's Anne-Marie Helder on vocals and ELO's Hugh McDowell played cello.

Of the release Geoff Downes said: " 'Urban Psalm' emerged out of a very special one-time concert featuring the music of John and I. Set in an historic church in London, the concert was recorded and filmed. Concert goers received a DVD as part of their attendance. Few people had the opportunity to see this live and until now has had very limited fan-based distribution."

The setting was historic and intimate and the film has not been shared widely until now, although fans came from around the world to participate. You're in for a rare treat!

Heylel from Portugal signs record deal with Into The LimeLight Records


Born in the fall of 2012, Heylel are a progressive rock band from Porto, Portugal.
The band combines influences ranging from classic to hard and even symphonic rock, with a very personal touch. The outcome is a dark, atmospheric and involving sound, gracefully combined with the beautiful voice of Ana Batista.

In 2014 the band released its debut album "Nebulae" and caught the attention of international progressive and rock press:

In September 2015 their second effort "Flesh" established the band in the international alternative rock scene.

Shades of Time (2017) will be the first album to feature the new five piece line up. Release by Into The Limelight Records this will be an album to look forward to. Set your watch; time is nearly here!

Silhouette - NEW ALBUM - Help us, Silhouette, to reach our humble goal to release the fifth album!

Silhouette is proud to announce "The World is Flat And Other Alternative Facts", our fifth studio album. It contains six songs with a total playing time of nearly 50 minutes. While still recognizably Silhouette, this musical journey contains influences of not only the founding fathers of progressive rock, but also of contemporary, modern acts. We won't tell you which ones, you will have to discover for yourself!


Silhouette is proud to announce "The World is Flat And Other Alternative Facts", our fifth studio album. It contains six songs with a total playing time of nearly 50 minutes. The 18 minute long epic "Bitter Sweet Memories Suite", consisting of five parts, is the longest song ever written by the band.
The album is unusually diverse and adventurous. While still recognizably Silhouette, this musical journey contains influences of not only the founding fathers of progressive rock, but also of contemporary, modern acts. We won't tell you which ones, you will have to discover for yourself! What we can tell you is that this artistic evolution is obviously due to the growing influence of the younger members of the band, who were more actively involved in the writing and arranging than on previous Silhouette albums.

Silhouette consists of:
Jurjen Bergsma: Bass guitar en backing vocals

While The World is Flat is not a concept album like the previous one, lyrically and musically, you will recognize an introspective mood all over the album. "The World is Flat" is foremost a statement about shallowness around us. About the influence of internet trolls, cheating bankers, lying politicians and incomprehensible violence, leading to scared people who don't know whom to trust anymore. Things that should matter don't seem to matter anymore in public life. Sometimes we feel the strength to stand up against these modern demons. But sometimes we don't, we cannot take it anymore and we give in to the desire to turn our backs to the flat world. We start searching for existential depth in our private lives, behind the protection of closed blinds in our homes. That is when we discover in the end it is all about living the moment, in the here and now. But also we find that even the most beautiful moments and memories have no meaning unless you can share them with your loved ones.


Having set our goal to €4000,- is not something we take lightly. Producing an album is expensive, even for us!

Edensong - "Years in the Garden of Years" on Vinyl?!! Anniversary Edition Coming Soon with Your Help!



Now is your chance to play a crucial role in a very special project for Edensong:
 
Our first vinyl pressing!  Since releasing Years in the Garden of Years back in September, we've been asked frequently if we plan to issue the album on vinyl.  This is something we've always dreamed of doing for this record (a project that we spent 8 years of our lives working on!) and we're very excited about the prospect of making this dream a reality!


  The considerable costs have made it impossible to do on our own. the sheer length of the album requires we make this a double album, effectively doubling the manufacturing costs.  Add to this the licensing fees to our label, design costs etc. and we're left with a pretty hefty price tag!!  So, if you're interested in seeing "Years in the Garden of Years" on vinyl and want to help us bring this anniversary edition into the world, please consider pledging some money today!

Additionally, If we raise enough money from the campaign, we plan to record a new (never released) song as a "vinyl only" track!!

The Tangent launch first track from new album 'The Slow Rust of Forgotten Machinery'




The Tangent, the progressive rock group led by Andy Tillison, recently announced the release of their first new music since 2015. Their new ninth studio album 'The Slow Rust of Forgotten Machinery' is set for release on July 21st, 2017, and today they launch the track 'Two Rope Swings' which you can listen to here:


Andy had this to say: "We wanted a song that could encapsulate our epic and cinematic style - but sort of compressed into a 7 minute piece instead of the 20 we work around when doing the larger format songs. 'Two Rope Swings' is a pocket symphony, 7 minutes that kicks off the album - almost like a little manifesto of what we do and how we do it. It's a story, it's a whole boatload of tunes, moods and styles. That's what we do.  We're still not entirely happy. The Beach Boys are still beating us by miles with "Good Vibrations", likewise Radiohead with '2+2=5' both of which are less than half as long but with just as much content. We'll keep trying!"

The song was originally commissioned as a solo piece by Andy for the 'Harmony For Elephants' project, in which the images of leading wildlife photographer Lesley Wood were brought together with music by a variety of artists, including Steve Hackett.  The Tangent version followed and features all members of the band prominently.
The line-up for this album once again features Tillison on keyboards, vocals (and for the first time on a Tangent record - drums), Jonas Reingold on bass, Luke Machin on guitars and vocals, and Theo Travis on sax and flutes plus new member Marie-Eve de Gaultier on keys and vocals. There are also guest appearances from author/playwright and Chumbawamba founder Boff Whalley on vocals, and upcoming DJ/producer Matt Farrow.

The album sees The Tangent in political commentary mode once again - this time often focussing on the horrendous plight of refugees from war torn parts of the world - and the way in which they are treated by the West, and in particular by the tabloid press. The album laments the new trend in building walls and defending borders across the world yet takes time to look at the breakup of friendships and other more personal issues - along with a song about the fate of wildlife in the modern consumer world.

And it's a Progressive Rock Record. Full of intricacies, long developed pieces, challenging arrangements and virtuoso playing from all members. New sounds and styles (the band have brought a DJ on board for some sections) - new voices and techniques (first female vocals in The Tangent since the "Not As Good As The Book" album 10 years ago). A new producer in the form of Luke Machin whose open and deep/clear sound is a major factor of this album, a new drummer in the form of Andy Tillison who decided at long last (after drumming for 30 years) to let his own performances guide the rest of the band rather than adding another musician later. And after 13 years of asking, Jonas finally agreed to play some double bass in a song where Luke also plays some Scat guitar and Andy does a full on drum solo.

"The Slow Rust Of Forgotten Machinery" also features stellar artwork from Marvel / DC Comics artist Mark Buckingham. The sleeve of the album is totally based on the music it contains and was especially created for this project.

SHAMAN'S HARVEST album info!



RED HANDS BLACK DEEDS - Out on July 28 on CD, Red vinyl, download and streaming

Goat toes (wait... what?), vintage amps, sandpaper, CNN, and Motown might not sound like they have anything to do with each other. But this seemingly odd mix actually comprises the sounds and words of Missouri hard rockers Shaman's Harvest latest album, Red Hands Black Deeds for Mascot Records.
 
"Goat toes are the new cowbells," laughs rhythm guitarist Josh Hamler about the rural percussion instrument made literally of goat toes on a string. "It was in our producer Keith Armstrong's toolbox. We'd tell Keith we wanted a certain sound, and he'd pull stuff out that we never thought of, like the goat toes, sandpaper or an old rotary telephone."

Lyrically, the band ventured into new territory, taking on the current political, social, and economic struggles the USA is facing as a nation. The result is a darker, visceral, layered and decidedly warmer, more analog sound compared to their 2014 Mascot album Smokin' Hearts & Broken Guns, which accumulated over 33 million streams to date.
