Our Oceans
Our Oceans is a new band, formed by guitarist Tymon Kruidenier (Exivious, ex-CYNIC) and singer/songwriter Noora Häkkinen. Featuring Robin Zielhorst (Exivious, ex-CYNIC) on fretless bass, Jasper Barendregt (Dodecahedron, Ulsect) on drums and Michel Nienhuis (Exivious, Dodecahedron) on additional guitars.
The story
Shortly after the release of Exivious' debut album in 2009, I wanted to change our musical direction in a very drastic manner. I felt there wasn't much left to say for me as a guitar player and composer in the context of instrumental fusion inspired music. So the plan was to go for a more song driven approach and add a singer to our lineup.
I spent weeks, scouring every corner of the internet, trying to find a suitable singer. Eventually I found a young girl by the name of Noora. She just started composing her own music for which she played the piano and sang. I immediately fell in love with her voice. So I contacted her and we started talking. As it turned out, she actually knew about Exivious and liked what we were doing. What are the odds?
As time went by, plans changed and we decided for Exivious to stay true to its instrumental roots. But Noora and I kept in touch and developed a strong friendship and musical connection. We always knew we wanted to work together at some point, it was simply a matter of time.
In a sense, Our Oceans is the realization of the alternate musical path I had in mind for Exivious.
What can you expect?
What most of you are probably wondering: does Our Oceans sound like Exivious? I'd have to say yes and no. For most, it will be quite obvious that the core of Our Oceans' music comes from a very similar place as Exivious' music. The embryonic ideas where songs start, are often quite complex and progressive and in many cases, could be turned into both Exivious or Our Oceans material.
Our Oceans' musical concept is quite different though, so that in turn makes for the biggest difference. The music is written with vocals and a more spacious and ethereal vibe in mind. So don't expect any crazy riffs or fusion solos. Do expect some very dense harmonies, big and epic post-rock passages and enchanting, goosebump-inducing vocal melodies.
And of course, feel free to judge for yourself from the short snippets included in the video above!
Funding
We've set a goal of 8,000 euros for this campaign. We're roughly halfway through the recording process, having recorded drums and most guitars. We still have to record bass, vocals and additional guitars. After that, we have to press CDs, print shirts, design artwork, and so on. And as with everything we do, we want to do it right! We'd like to put just as much care into the artwork and packaging as we put into the music. So with that said, we can really use some financial help to continue working on this album.
Your support
Our Oceans is a new and unknown band and on top of that, we're independent so we're not signed to a label that can do promotion for us. With initiatives like crowd-funding, we hope the time is right to release the artsy type of music we make, in an independent setting like this. However, we can't do it without you guys! So in case you're planning to support this campaign or if you already did: thank you, your support is hugely appreciated!
And even if you can't afford to support us directly by participating in this campaign, you can still help us by spreading the word and sharing the campaign video on your Facebook timeline or other social networking websites. Every little bit helps, it really does!

Our Oceans' music can be described as immersive, otherworldly and deeply melancholic.
