The Red Masque - Beta-Lactum Ring Records to Release Mythalogue early 2013

Beta-lactum Ring Records Signs The Red Masque, Releases New Album, Mythalogue, in early 2013

Philadelphia avant rock band The Red Masque recently completed a Kickstarter campaign to raise recording / mixing funds for their latest studio album Mythalogue. The campaign was successfully funded through the generous support of the band's fans. This new album will feature nine new studio tracks (recorded in spring 2012) as well as one live song (professionally recorded at a show in Philadelphia in 2011). The album is currently being mixed by acclaimed musician and producer Bob Drake in France.
Mythalogue will be released in two formats: a standard issue CD and special limited art edition, all presented in a custom made book-bound gatefold sleeve with a fold-out mini poster featuring artwork by TRM vocalist Lynnette Shelley. The custom art CD (edition of 50) will feature mini original artworks by Lynnette. These artworks will be presented in the format known as Artist Trading Cards (ATC), which are the size of a standard baseball card. Each card will be one-of-a-kind.  The nine new tracks include both five main songs as well as four "intercessionals" recorded by the individual band members: The Wendigo, The Minotaur, The Dark Salt Sea, The Song for Icarus, The Labyrinth, The Sires and the Snakes, The Blessing, The Curse and The Ruins of the Palace of Minos. The bonus live song is a professional recording of "Polyphemus", which the band played at the Fire in Philadelphia in May 2011. Previously, Polyphemus appeared on the band's last studio album, Fossil Eyes (released through ReR USA in 2008). This makes a total of ten songs on Mythalogue.

The band will be setting up some shows to promote the new album once it's released. They are interested in playing alternative venues (livng room concerts, art spaces and other non-club venues). If you would like to see about having the band perform in your area, please email theredmasque@theredmasque.com. Currently a show is in the works for August to preview the songs on the album, with some further shows being worked on for the winter that will both preview the new album as well as showcase live perfomrances of the songs on the album. Please visit http://theredmasque.com/schedule.html to keep informed of any upcoming shows.

Mr Gil - I want you to get back home
Label: Metal Mind Productions
Cat no.: MMP CD 0705 DG

Format: CD DG
Genre: Progressive rock
Release date: 04.06.2012 Europe / 10.07.2012 USA

Tracklist:

1. Time
2. Our Shoes
3. In Your Heart
4. Find Me
5. Change Your Name
6. Fix My Arms
7. Start Again
8. Goodnight
9. Come Home

The beginning of Mr Gil dates back to 1998. It was then that Mirek Gil, the guitarist of the progressive group Collage, decided to present his artistic abilities on his first solo album “Alone”. He invited his fellow musicians to this project: Olaf Łapczyński on vocals, Krzysztof Palczewski on keyboards, Piotr Witkowski on bass and Vlodi Tafel on drums. The most outstanding track on that album was undoubtedly the song “Beggar”, which to this day is often performed during the concerts of groups led by Mirek Gil. After the success of “Alone”, the band chose to keep silent for the next 10 years. In 2009, the idea of reactivating the project was born. The band released “Skellig” in 2010, this time with Karol Wróblewski (Believe) on vocals. Also in 2010, the band released the album “Light and Sound”. And now the band return with their fourth studio album entitled „I Want You to Get Back Home”. As the band say: „You can't plan everything. And especially you cannot control what comes out of the human soul. Because it is the need for honesty, friendship and passion that grew into the idea of Mr. Gil's new album. Friends decided to meet again in the studio to complete their story..." And this story started with their album „Light & Sound”, when the band's new improved line-up crystalized:  Mirek Gil (guitars), Karol Wróblewski (vocals), Konrad Wantrych (piano, keys) and Paulina Druch (cello). Their album „I Want You to Get Back Home”, recorded in the same line-up, brings 9 brand new tracks. „It’s like coming back home, like a return to peace and warmth” says Mirek Gil. „In our new music, there is a lot of friendship and that was the main idea behind it. Is there anything more important, more beautiful than this? We have managed to learn more about each other. It is in each other that we have found that home”.

New Song Released by Rockers Magellan

"Keep It" Single Follows Two Classic Covers

June 21, 2012, San Francisco, CA – The latest digital single from Magellan continues the momentum for a banner year for the outfit. Coming in quick succession after covers of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and The Beatles' "Hello, Goodbye," "Keep It" is the first original composition from Magellan for 2012.

Scott Kahn of MusicPlayers.com posted this about the song on the zine's Facebook page: ""Kansas meets Dream Theater on the new single from prog rock band, Magellan…"Keep It," is big on the classic rock vibe with its multi-part vocal harmonies, while the shred-worthy riffing delivers the impressive chops these guys are known for." When you consider that the new original comes hot on the heels of two covers earning reviews like, "I found heavy-prog rockers Magellan's interpretation of The Fab Four's iconic song to be just as  listenable, danceable, 'singalongable' as the original." (Vivian Lee) and "'Dust in the Wind' is given a makeover that will even impress skeptics." (Josh Turner), it's obvious Magellan are on creative fire these days.

"Keep It" represents the first new original music from Magellan since 2007. It also serves as the first new song leading up to the release of a new Magellan album, Inert Momentum. In the modern age, the model of an album getting released all at once seems to be a dying paradigm.

Magellan have always been a forward thinking band, and therefore they've embraced the concept of releasing digital singles as each is finished. Ultimately, it gives fans a chance to enjoy new songs immediately upon completion.

Magellan was formed in the San Francisco Bay area in 1985. The Gardner brothers have been the core of the group since its inception. Guests on various Magellan albums have included Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson, Tony Levin and Twisted Sister's Joe Franco. Like the explorer whose name the band took, Magellan strives to forge new and unexplored paths.

For more information you can check out Magellan on the web at http://magellansongs.com. The single can be downloaded from Apple's iTunes and emusic - or the band's website. Legitimate media representatives can get a review copy of "Keep It" by sending an email to pr@musicstreetjournal.com or magellansongs@gmail.com. The same email addresses can be used to set up interviews or get any other materials needed for features. In addition, Magellan's "Innocent God" album can be streamed on the main page of the band's website, magellansongs.com.

Psychothermia - Here's Another FREE Track!

Here's Another FREE Track!

We get asked about our name a lot, so here is a little Psychothermia History 101:

The four of us played together in a previous project called "Canobliss" check it out at www.canobliss1.com.

We wrote a song and album called "Psychothermia". The song was one of our most popular and is about controlling your mental temperature and responding firmly in the face of adversity.  Well, with months of legal battles over the old band name our mental temperatures and dedication were tested to the max. Thus we felt "Psychothermia" was the perfect name for our new project and here we are, stronger and better than ever!

To thank you for continuing to support us here is the song "Psychothermia", a piece of our history! (click here to download)

ARJEN LUCASSEN posts new video for "Pink Beatles in a Purple Zeppelin"

Multi-instrumentalist ARJEN LUCASSEN has posted a new video for the track "Pink Beatles in a Purple Zeppelin," taken from his recently released concept solo album, Lost In The New Real. The video was mainly shot where ARJEN grew up, near the sea in Holland. In regards to the video, ARJEN comments: "It's a very 'Dutch' clip, windmills and all!  So you could say this clip goes back to my roots, also musically. It features many visual links (at least 10!) to the bands and albums that I grew up listening to. Peace, man!"

The album begins as Mr. L is being revived at a point in the distant future, when technology has advanced enough to cure his disease. Mr. L finds himself in a world that has drastically changed -- to the point that the line between what's real and what's not is no longer clear.

The tracks on disc 1 follow Mr. L's emotional journey as he is confronted with both serious and comical aspects of the "New Real" and desperately tries to decide if he can find a meaningful place within it. Disc 2 is a mix of tracks that are part of the concept but didn't fit on disc 1, plus cover songs related to the concept.

Avant Prog Ensemble miRthkon to Release New Live DVD

Oakland, CA - The prog world is buzzing with excitement about the forthcoming DVD release by miRthkon; Oakland, CA based amplified chamber ensemble masquerading as a rock band. This illusion is well maintained by the fact that from time to time they do indeed rock. Maintaining a passionate aesthetic stance that they are (quite happily) 'beneath everything', their music – whether evoking the direct or indirect influence of progressive rock, contemporary classical abstraction, avant-garde jazz, catchy hook-laden pop, or thrash metal – is held to a simple but firm standard: Does it sound good? miRthkon's forthcoming live DVD titled (Format) is a testament to the group's innovative approach to live performance and music in general.

"The DVD was somewhat of an accident," explains band leader and guitarist Wally Scharold. "It was not planned. We had incorporated live and pre-recorded video projection in our shows since mid-2008. These were originally introduced as short interludes between songs to keep the audience engaged during long song breaks due to required technical changes to perform the next song. By the time we played CalProg in October 2010, our multimedia approach was at its most ambitious, including nearly 30 of these videos. It was very well rehearsed and we performed it beautifully, all captured in a free 32-track recording, provided by the festival. I had filmed our set from a single angle in the hall's light booth for archival purposes, which was hardly enough to justify a legit concert film. But after reaching out to the fans, we managed to track down a couple more angles – one very close to the stage – and suddenly we had the raw footage to cut together something. However, the lack of any real planning (and professional videographers) made for less than ideal footage, so we had to get really creative with the editing when we just didn't have the shot we wanted. One and 1/2 years later, it's finally done." Unlike a standard concert film, (Format) integrates interviews, surrealistic documentary footage, and an underlying plot pointing to a vast conspiracy!

miRthkon's diverse musical influences range from Classical: Webern, Stravinsky, Dutilleux, Varese, Feldman, Gerhard. Metal: late 80s/early 90s thrash, Meshuggah, Fantomas. Avant-Rock: Mr. Bungle, Albert Marcoeur, Thinking Plague, Tipographica, Magma. Jazz: Eric Dolphy, Jimmy Giuffre, Anthony Braxton, Muhal Richard Abrams, Henry Threadgill, Hermeto Pascoal, Itibere Orquestra Familia, Ben Monder, Raymond Scott. Pop/Rock: ZZ Top, Michael Jackson, Ben Folds. "Zappa is the primary influence, on multiple levels: the approach to the music is similar how the rock band format is run much more like a chamber ensemble," says Wally. "Players need fluency in virtually all modes of performance practice in which their instrument is or has been involved including contemporary classical, big band to avant/free jazz, metal, prog, funk, etc. Zappa's attitude/philosophy/aesthetic/humor is also a huge influence. In a way, you could say we've hopped on to a similar thread of 'Conceptual Continuity'. We employ his 'journalistic' approach of incorporating experiences from our own life/environment into the content of our work. Often to an extreme, though most of that goes over peoples' heads."

miRthkon is:
Wally Scharold – guitars, vocals, composition, sound design, conceptual design, text, video, producer
Travis Andrews – guitars
Matt Lebofsky – bass guitar, vocals
Carolyn Walter – piccolo, flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone
Jamison Smeltz – alto saxophone, baritone saxophone, vocals
Matt Guggemos – drums and percussion
Jarred McAdams – video, text, conceptual collaborator

Here's what the press has said about miRthkon:

"A big-sounding, in-your-face outfit, adopting the familiar format of RIO/Avant ensembles (a core plus a number of guests and collaborators), they have immediately established themselves as a name to watch with one of the most impressive debut albums of the past two decades (and possibly longer)." - Raffaella Berry, Progressor.net

Their brand of avant-rock with jazzy and big-band-like interludes, backed by metal-ish sounding guitars and reed instruments of sorts is a delight to listen to, as they go nuts and move progressively forward in an abstract–like manner. Listening to this brought to my mind, Mr. Bungle, Frank Zappa, Miriodor and Invincible Czars, to give you a rough estimate of what to expect." - Assaf Vestin, Sonic Frontiers

"It's prog rock. But there's so much more here that you won't find in typical prog circles: a rollicking sense of humor, a heavy dose of real jazz (garbled, knotted free jazz, NOT the occasional major-7th chord that rock reviewers call "jazz"), and amusing spoken-word segments like futuristic (yet old-world) radio announcements." - Forrest Bryant, Memory Select

The variations within the compositions are so many that trying to describe each track would make this article more like a book than a review. The music throughout is intense, sometimes dark and heavy, sometimes playful but always adventurous." - Richard Barnes, Sea of Tranquility

For those in the know, miRthkon means 'the illusion of joy" – and for those in the know, this is a misnomer, for there is no illusion. This was pure joy." - Richard Warp, Berkeley Music Examiner

In support of their new DVD release, miRthkon will tour thee US in August. Joining the band at various stops will be MoeTar, Lovely Little Ladies (Cheer Accident side project), District 97, Thinking Plague, Kayo Dot, and TBD.

Marillion...just a few more days and they will be in North America!

Seminal British rockers Marillion, return to North America for a 13-date summer tour, begins on June 10 in Washington DC

  • Marillion are Steve 'h' Hogarth (vocals), Steven Rothery (guitar), Pete Trewavas (bass), Mark Kelly (keyboard) and Ian Mosley (drums).
  • The band's first visit to the US since 2004, the tour will hit several cities across North America, with 2-consecutive-night events planned in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles
Since 1997 Marillion have had an intimate relationship with their fans, beginning with the first ever fan-sponsored US tour fund.  They continue to pre-sell releases, even before the recording process begins.

The seventh biannual Marillion Weekend is set for March-April 2013.  The most unique music experience, wherein fans have an opportunity to not only see their favorite act perform different sets, three nights in a row, but also become immersed in the Marillion culture and history with various activities. Link for more information: http://www.marillionweekend.com/

Thanks to their much lauded (and much copied) pioneering internet-based rock n' roll business model, Marillion have developed a unique and intimate relationship with their fans. From sponsoring entire tours of the USA to funding the recording of recent albums, Marillion's global fan-base is unique in its affection and dedication.

In 2001, Anoraknophobia saw Marillion take the groundbreaking step of asking fans to pre-order an album 12 months before release. An amazing 12,000 people signed up, helping to finance the recording.

Hailed as Internet pioneers for their game-changing use of technology to unify and mobilize their global fan community, Marillion have been un-compromising with their music and vision. Their revolutionary presale campaigns, in-house label and their own Racket Records recording studio, Marillion have remained uniquely independent and paved the way for a new business model that works.

The band once again took pre-orders for the 2004 masterpiece Marbles, but this time the money was channelled into a campaign fund to promote its launch.  Singles "Don't Hurt Yourself" and "You're Gone" breached the UK Top 20 – the latter making it all the way to number 7!

ProgDay Preshow and More!

In the interest of keeping our attendees informed of musical events around the ProgDay weekend, we are happy to announce two performances.

GOING FOR THE ONE and MINSTRELS IN THE GALLERY:

On Friday, August 31, the Carrboro Arts Center will be hosting a show featuring Going For The One and Minstrels In The Gallery.

Going For The One is America's premier Yes tribute, celebrating the music of one of rock history's most important and inspired bands. GFTO does not present a literal recreation or impersonation of Yes; it is rather a group of talented musicians who strive to preserve and continue the tradition of classic Yes music and performance.  Versions of songs are derived from both studio and live performances, with some liberty taken within the bounds of what Yes might have done. As much as possible, the band use the equipment Yes used in the 70s, with some updates employed for technical reasons. The band's goal in presenting this music is clear with each performance: GFTO is a celebration of Yes music.  The current show blends tracks drawn from The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Going for the One, and other Yes albums from the 70s.

Formed in 2011 and bringing together members from the Rochester and Cleveland areas, Minstrels In The Gallery has already begun to establish a reputation as one the best Jethro Tull tribute bands in the country through shows in Cleveland, Rochester, and Pittsburgh, as well as at the ClassicFest at Nelson Ledges (Ohio).  The current show draws from Tull music from the 60s and 70s, with an emphasis on the classic 70s tracks.

DEAD CAN DANCE:

The reunion World Tour of neoclassical world music duo Dead Can Dance is coming to DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center, on Saturday, September 1. This world tour includes only 12 US cities, including Durham, to be accompanied by the release of a new album.  Showtime is 8pm.

ProgDay 2012 is the 18th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world. The festival will take place on Saturday, September 1st, and Sunday, September 2nd, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  Confirmed bands include Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic (US), Accordo Dei Contrari (Italy) and Jack Dupon (France), with five more bands to be announced.

Glam Rock Icon Michael Des Barres Returns To His London Roots With 'Carnaby Street'

Michael Des Barres Returns To His London Roots With 'Carnaby Street'
June 18, 2012 - Los Angeles, CA - There is much excitement within the music press and fans alike around the world about the news of the return of glam rock icon Michael Des Barres and his forthcoming CD release 'Carnaby Street' On Gonzo MultiMedia, UK. Michael Des Barres has been in the rock 'n' roll scene for four decades now. A European nobleman, brought up in England, living in Los Angeles, but with an enduring love of delta blues and the rock and soul of the mid-60s beat boom, he was front man for such seminal 1970s bands as Silverhead and Detective (featuring Tony Kaye of Yes). Jimmy Page personally signed Detective to Led Zeppelin's Swan Song records in 1975. From 1982 to 1985, Michael was a member of Chequered Past, which included Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols. Clem Burke and Nigel Harrison from Blondie, and Tony Sales of Todd Rundgren ('Runt') and Tin Machine fame. Michael Des Barres was also the singer with the touring and LiveAid version of The Power Station, a Duran Duran spin-off band that became one of the most iconic live acts of the mid-1980s. In 1985, Michael penned the song "Obsession", which became a number one hit in 27 countries for LA new wave group Animotion; the track has been featured in numerous movies throughout the years.

After over 40 years of recording and performing, Michael has returned to his mid-Sixties roots with 'Carnaby Street', his first new album in many years. Revisiting his youth in swinging London, 'Carnaby Street' is an aural window into rock and roll's past through the eyes and mind of Michael Des Barres. "The music I am making now is inspired by my past in the mid '60s / early '70s," Michael explains. "As a kid I would go watch all the skinny white blues rock 'n' roll musicians in the clubs and it hit me like a hammer! I was so influenced by both the courage of these young white guys combined with the soulful rawness of the African American bluesmen, and the hybrid was so fascinating to me that it really stimulated my entire musical vocabulary.
So, a couple of years ago, when I started writing songs again, I realised that I wanted these new songs to be as authentic as I had initially heard and was inspired by."

This album may quote from the idioms laid down by Wilson Pickett, Zoot Money, and The Rolling Stones, but it is no exercise in retro-stylings. This is very much a piece of the second decade of the 21st Century. It may even be Michael Des Barres' most important work to date. The opening line of the title track immediately sets the tone of the album; "I was 19 in 1967, on the streets of London. I was in Heaven. I was Oscar Wilde in velvet jeans. Everything you've heard is everything I've seen." He is adamant that this is not an homage to mid-Sixties music, but a contemporary album by a contemporary band presenting songs about that particular time in his life: a time when as a teenager just entering manhood the world as a whole was celebrating 'The Summer of Love'. "The name of the album 'Carnaby Street', for me, is a metaphor for the swinging London '60s," says Michael, "that whole youth cultural revolution that literally changed the world. So the name reflects my desire to go back to the roots, the joy and the love of the music when I first heard it."

British born the Marquis Michael Philip Des Barres, along with his excursions into rock stardom, is also a gifted actor and is best known for his reccurring role as Murdoc on the popular television show 'MacGyver'. He has been featured in dozens of movies and television shows over the past 40 years (including Seinfeld, ALF, Frasier, Bones, Ellen, Nip/Tuck and Pink Cadillac with Clint Eastwood) and was also a featured actor in the '60s classic movie 'To Sir With Love' featuring Sidney Poitier. Michael was formerly married to GTO's member Pamela des Barres, best known for her top-selling book 'I'm With The Band'.
Recently, Michael Des Barres reunited with Silverhead for the first time in 38 years and performed to sold out audiences in Japan in April 2012. The reaction from the Japanese audience was electric! Michael is still very active acting and was featured in the US FOX television show 'The Finder' on May 4, 2012. A recent guest appearance on the new season of USA Network's 'Suits' will air sometime this summer. He is also featured in the movie 'California Solo', in which Michael plays the manager of Robert Carlyle's ex-rocker character, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah on January 25th. In support of Michael Des Barre's new album release, several live shows are currently being scheduled. "The majority of the people that have come to see us play, and we've only played perhaps a dozen shows, has been 80 percent a young audience, early and mid-twenties, who consider us an indie band, ironically," says Michael. "The music we are playing is below the waist rock 'n' roll, and I think that the audiences are kind of starved for a carnal, sensual, sexy blues music. There's nothing ironic about our music – there's nothing angry or apologetic about our music. We are there to make people happy and joyous and fall in love."
In closing Michael Des Barres has this to impart to his followers of the past four decades: "The message that I have to say to fans and friends, and I don't think of them as fans, I think of them as friends – and they are friends. We should all be friends, and really my belief in connection and engagement and letting people into your life... and I say it in the briefest possible way – LOVE EVERYONE NOW!"

Hawkwind founding member John Hamilton dies at age 70

Cleopatra Records has released the following statement:

With great sadness we wish to announce that John Harrison, founding bassist for legendary space rock band Hawkwind, passed away in his sleep on May 26, 2012. John had been suffering from Huntington disease, having been diagnosed with it in 2005. At the time of his death, John was being cared for at Garden Crest clinic in Los Angeles. His caregivers there reported that he passed peacefully at approximately 8 p.m. John would have been 70 on May 28.
(John Hamilton, far left)
John's throbbing and inventive bass parts on the band's self-titled 1970 release laid the foundation for Hawkwind's influential sound, both then and now. After his departure from the band, John also worked successfully as a producer and staff engineer at Village Recorders in Los Angeles.

Former Hawkwind guitarist Huw Lloyd-Langton said in a statement:  "John was an integral part of Hawkwind's formation and eventual success. His honest, solid character and playing held the whole thing together in that first year of the group's existence (in more ways than one)!  All who worked with him and have followed in his footsteps, i.e. Lemmy :) and all Hawkfans, old & young. Wherever you are owe him big time! May he Rock In Peace wherever he is now!"  Huw has recently guested on several Cleopatra Records releases including a highly acclaimed Black Keys tribute on a track with Kinks founding guitarist Dave Davies (Huw plays guitar, Dave sings lead vocals), and on "Love Reign O'er Me" for the eagerly awaited Who tribute album that also features rock legends Rick Wakeman, Carmine Appice and Def Leppard lead vocalist Joe Elliott.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to John's family and friends along with fans of Hawkwind everywhere.

...Thurisch is as good as always, keeping that high dark note, such beautiful. ANGEL DUST may have broken my illusions for many years, but Thurisch and MERCURY TIDE in a way told me that still there are musicians that take their job very seriously, and do more than just words for their music...

Wilko Johnson announces Autumn 2012 UK Tour

Following the release of Wilko Johnson's autobiography, Looking Back At Me, the legendary former guitarist of Dr Feelgood, who's influenced everyone from Joe Strummer and Mick Jones to Steve Albini, is pleased to announce an Autumn 2012 UK Tour with special guest Virgil and the Accelerators.

Tickets are on sale from the 24 hour box office: 0844 478 0898 and www.eventim.co.uk. The tour gets underway at the Bath Komedia on October 11th

Described by Wilko as a "fractured autobiography," Looking Back At Me, co-written with Zoe Howe, is published this month by Cadiz Music.  Click HERE for more info about the book.

After pioneering the Feelgood's distinctive mid 70s, pre-punk British R&B sound (which had a significant impact on the British punk rock music), Wilko went on to play guitar for Ian Dury and the Blockheads. His current touring band features current Blockhead members Norman Watt-Roy (bass guitar), and Dylan Howe (drums).  Click HERE for further info about the upcoming UK tour.
