Modest Midget

September 3rd the band was booked for a long set, sharing the Boerderij stage (Zoetermeer) together with the very talented Swedish band Moon Safari.

Unfortunately a small transition within the line-up of the band appears to take more time and work than we expected.

As a result we were forced to cancel this concert. However,Moon Safari is a fantastic band that we are certain will deliver a wonderful evening.

We hope that this change of plans hasn't caused any inconvenience on your part. Modest Midget will definitely be playing in De Boerderij and elsewhere in the near future.

For now, we leave you once more with our recently released single from our upcoming album, available on iTunes, Amazon, and other iDigital-type iShops!...

See the love / enjoy 'the making of'

Rocky Valleys of Dawn

Rays of light are shining through

The world is smiling bright
And waiting just for you
Raise your eyes and look up high
The air is fresh and cool
It's no more time to hide

Learn to make a sound, to walk the ground, and just to hang around
Learn to feel the earth, to smell the grass, and hug a lady gown

Race yourself right through
Your dreams and goals my friend
Chase them straight to the end
Face your hopes and fears
And learn to love them too
They will be there for you

Learn to make a life, to fight and strive, and build your own sweet hive
Learn to taste the wine, to cook and dine, and make your bed on time

Learn to see your fellow man
To hear and understand
And maybe give a hand
Learn to see the love
Enjoy the making of
And cherish all you have

Find the beauty in whatever grim confronts you from within
Rocky as it is, still in the end this is your path my friend

Leslie West to release new studio album "Still Climbing"

Leslie West, the legendary guitarist, vocalist and original founding member of Mountain, will release a new studio album"Still Climbing" on October 28th via Provogue Records / Mascot Label Group.

Since his historic performance with Mountain at the 1969 Woodstock Festival, West has enjoyed a glittering career spanning over half a century, accomplished in spite of a life threatening battle with diabetes, which cost him his right leg in 2011 (shortly before the release of his "Unusual Suspects" album).

"I'm lucky it wasn't one of my hands or I'd be screwed," says West. "It was a difficult struggle, and after the amputation I didn't know whether I'd ever want to or be able to perform again. A month later I played at the Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp in New York City, and I heard my guitar on stage and that was it. I knew I had to keep going."

Looked upon by West as a sequel to "Unusual Suspects", which featured collaborations with the likes of Slash, Zakk Wylde, Steve Lukather, Joe Bonamassa and Billy Gibbons, "Still Climbing" sees West joining forces with Jonny Lang,Johnny Winter, Twisted Sister's Dee Snider and Alter Bridge and Creed's Mark Tremonti.

Read the official press release, download album artwork and photos here – http://bit.ly/19fz2bG

Album Track Listing

01. Dyin' Since The Day I Was Born (with special guest Mark Tremonti)
02. Busted, Disgusted or Dead (with special guest Johnny Winter)
03. Fade Into You
04. Not Over You At All
05. Tales Of Woe
06. Feeling Good (with special guest Dee Snider)
07. Hatfield or McCoy
08. When A Man Loves A Woman (with special guest Jonny Lang)
09. Long Red
10. Don't Ever Let Me Go (with special guest Dylan Rose)
11. Rev Jones Time (Somewhere Over The Rainbow)

"Still Climbing" is co-produced by West and Mike "Metal" Goldberg, who engineered all of the sessions.  Songs like "Dyin' Since The Day I Was Born," "Hatfield or McCoy," and"Busted, Disgusted or Dead" establish a new litmus test for "heavy."

The latter features West and Johnny Winter on duelling slide guitars. West also gave up smoking cigarettes and pot after a bout with bladder cancer, so it's no wonder many of Still Climbing's numbers explore the theme of survival and, ultimately, triumph. To that end, West avows, "Not only am I lucky to be here, but because I stopped smoking my voice is now stronger than it's ever been - as strong as my guitar playing."

His inclusion of "Feeling Good," a song by British actor-musician Anthony Newley that was made famous by Steve Winwood's group Traffic, is a testimonial to all of that.  Its lyrics celebrate a "new dawn for me" as West and his long-time buddy Dee Snider(Twisted Sister) trade vocal lines.

West has always been an outstanding vocalist, earning comparisons to soul legends like Otis Redding since his 1969 debut Mountain, which gave his historic band its name. On "Still Climbing" West revisits the catalogue of another classic soul man, Percy Sledge, with the enduring"When a Man Loves a Woman."  He's joined by now 32 year-old soul man Jonny Lang, who he met 15 years ago when Lang was a rising guitar prodigy. West says they cut the tune side-by-side in the studio, their soaring guitars and voices twining to bring fresh blood and a blues-soaked arrangement to the song.

"When a Man Loves a Woman," "Never Let Me Go" and "Fade Into You" explore a romantic theme.  In 2009 West married his wife Jenni, who co-wrote many of Still Climbing's songs with the guitar giant.

They exchanged vows on stage at the Woodstock 40th Anniversary Concert. West credits her with saving his life - first with her love, and then by making the difficult decision to permit his doctors to amputate while he was in a coma.

"Being in Mountain was one of the most satisfying things I have ever done in my professional life," says West. "I became a musician, not just a guitar player."

"Being in Mountain with Felix Pappalardi was an honour. He was so talented as a producer, arranger, bass player, guitar player - all the things I aspired to be. We had some great years together, and some rocky roads. His wife Gail, who by the way shot and killed Felix, could suck the fun out of a clown. It left a terrible taste in my mouth about working with my wife, Jenni. I did not want to risk going down that path where your wife was involved in every aspect of your musical life. Jenni has become so good at expressing thoughts to paper. She has become my primary collaborator on the lyrical side of my new recordings."

West has been performing since 1965, when he fronted the soul-fired Vagrants in his native New York City. Rolling Stone placed him at #66 on their list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists."

His repertoire continues to be relevant with enduring appeal to this day as top selling rap recordings are built around samples from "Long Red," which appeared on the Mountain album. Jay-Z tapped the tune for his 2004 mega-smash "99 Problems." So did Kanye West, for "Barry Bonds" and "The Glory," and Common's "The People," along with others.

Recently, Lana Del Rey sampled West's voice and features it in the beginning, middle and end of the worldwide smash "Born To Die." For "Still Climbing," West re-recorded "Long Red" with his brother and former Vagrants-mate Larry West on bass. He offers, "It was time for me to let people hear that song the way I do it now. I used a B-3 organ on it again, but this time it has a lot more balls."

Balls, guts, heart - more words that are part of West's legend and describe the roaring crescendos and deep emotional roots of "Still Climbing" - and West himself.  "You know, when it comes to talent, we don't all move at the same rate of speed," West muses. "Some people start at the top of their game and after 10 or 20 years you wonder what the hell happened to them. I like to joke that the older I get the better I used to be, but after giving up drugs and smoking, my voice can hit notes that I never could reach before. I'm thankful for that."

CORIMA at ProgDay 2013!

"Corima is a stunning amalgamation of musicians, bridging the past foundations of...Zeuhl and the modern musings of experimental fusion...With Corima, I feel the sound is launched far into the future and grafted with shades of many worlds and still lives on its own regardless of the past foundations that are present...Every song is filled with an abundance of musical composition and directions to making music. To nail the intervals, spacing and free form embellishments that Corima achieves is a task all its own. To make it sound as tasteful and soothing as their full length Quetzalcoatl is really puts me back in my seat."
- Erik Otis, SOUNDCOLOURVIBRATION.COM

"Corima is a young US band playing zeuhl music! The band formed a few years ago in Texas before moving to LA as a duo and then recruiting new members...Corima's music owes a lot to Magma...being a succession of personal ideas and heavy glimpses towards the master founder of the Zeuhl genre. The cosmogony is no longer Kobaïan but deals with the Mexican myth of Quetzalcoatl (the feathered-snake God) who talks to his people... In short, Corima... pays homage to Magma in a very festive way, taking an approach rather similar to Koenjihyakkei."
- Soleil Zeuhl

ProgDay is very pleased to host this five-piece band's first show on the east coast of the US.

CORIMA (US) will join OBLIVION SUN (US), HERD OF INSTINCT (US), MIRIODOR (Canada), THANK YOU SCIENTIST (US) and SIMAKDIALOG (Indonesia) at ProgDay 2013, the nineteenth edition of the world's longest running progressive rock festival.  ProgDay 2013 will take place on Saturday, August 31st, and Sunday, September 1st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from all of this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

Seconds Before Landing Official video for "Welcome, To The Future"

Lillian Axe

It's Sunday night at 7:16, and this is the first time I have been able
to sit and wrap my head around what happened Thursday morning. I want
to thank so many people for their care and concerns. To all of our
fans and friends all over the world, thank you from the bottom of my
heart for your texts, emails, calls and prayers for the 4 of us and
our families. I want to tell you about the accident because I feel
it's an important lesson for me and maybe it will touch some people in
a positive way.

Eric Morris, our bassist, Richard Plaisance, our stage manager, Bobby
Brown, our crew and merch guy, and I, left from Mandeville towards
Dallas to play Trees Thursday night. All was well and we were meeting
the guys in the a.m., sleep a while and hit the venue for soundcheck
around 2pm. Since it was only a 2 date run, we were pulling our
trailer with all of our gear with Richie's Yukon. Around 5 a.m., an
hour from our location, I was awakened, (I had fallen asleep in the
front passenger seat) by Richie's screams and a very hard impact, the
sound of breaking glass and our vehicle hurtling towards something
else that through the broken windshield appeared to be a pole of
sorts. I keep replaying this moment in my head over and over, and I
can hear the sounds and feel the crash every time. I remember while we
were hitting things and moving across the grass, that I kept saying "
It's ok, It's ok, It's ok……."

Our driver had lost control of the vehicle and left the highway doing
around 70 mph and collided with a huge industrial sign, the ones that
direct traffic into a certain lane with arrows, etc. I don't know what
this one said because it was obliterated. I found out later that this
was one of those extremely large sigs which held 15 or more batteries
inside to power the lights. The BIG ones. We finally stopped, and the
first thing I thought of was "Am I dead?" My 3 mates were talking and
moving so I knew they were alive. We all felt our bodies to see if we
were bleeding or missing any body parts. At that moment the pain in my
eyes set in, and I felt burning which I found was the cloud of glass
fragments that had entered both of my eyes.

From there on, everything was blurry as the tears poured down my face
due to the glass. Richie, who was behind me, and I tried to open our
doors but they were crushed and would not budge. Eric and Bobby got
out on their side, so Richie and I climbed across the seats and exited
their doors. The guys told me later that my first words were "Don't
worry, we can still do the gig." I don't remember that. The next bit
was like a dream. I fell to the ground, no shoes and socks on, and
noticed I was in some kind of very hard grass or weeds, almost like
little bamboo shoots. I yelled out " Are you guys ok?" We all
acknowledged that we were alive and seemingly in one piece. Cars
started pulling up and people were getting out to see if we were ok.
The strange part is that all seemed to leave when they found out we
were alive.

I will try to explain the scene through my blurred vision. Richie came
up to me as I was sitting on the ground and I said "We'll be ok." He
said frantically "Have you seen the trailer?" I could see nothing but
lights and shadows at that point. I squinted and saw what I thought
was a giant dumpster covered in trash and clothes. I thought that was
what we hit! "No that's the trailer!"

People, I can only tell you that the scene looked like one from a
Faces of Death episode. The trailer was shredded as if a can opener
had a field day with it. Metal shreds were everywhere and pieces of
metal were sticking 20 feet in the air. Equipment, cases, boxes,
lights, trussing, etc. was strewn all over scene. The Yukon was
completely totaled.

I went to the car to find my shoes and saw that the back seat was
halfway shoved to the front and glass was everywhere. The windshield
was destroyed and the sun visor had actually penetrated it. I thought
it was my head that hit it, but I had no head wounds. Then the
screaming red lights and sirens started coming, and all I could think
of was that these people were going to be upset that we had stopped
traffic for miles. The cops came, the emt's came, and I think there
was even a firetruck. Things were really blurry and my eyes started
burning heavily. There was so much adrenaline flowing that I didn't
realize my other injuries yet. I made sure the guys were good. Bobby
seemed ok, Richie knocked a tooth out, had a few cuts and wrenched his
back pretty badly. Eric hurt his back and neck pretty badly also, and
I started feeling pains in the back and shoulders and arms. The
effects of the whiplash would really set in on the 3 of us over the
next 2 days.

The ambulance took the 3 of us to the nearest emergency hospital.
Fortunately, it was a slow night/morning so we were tended to
immediately. They irrigated my eyes and Eric's. I still had a piece in
my left eye which I had removed the next day. All 3 of us have upper
torso pain but hopefully that will not lead to future problems. It may
have helped that we were asleep at the impact. We spent around 4 hours
in the hospital before being released. Eric had a stylish neck brace
on, but I couldn't convince to take it with him. We were all very
blessed to not have been killed. The EMT's told me that when they
pulled up to the scene, they labeled their immediate assessment as
this was an "Oh shit" scene, meaning all fatalities. If we had hit the
sign head on, we would all be dead, as the trailer and sign would have
crushed us to death. If the trailer had not come apart, we would have
flipped many times and probably all killed. This was nothing but God
saving us, I don't care what anyone else thinks. I felt his peace as I
was being jerked around in that car.

Later that day, we all went to the salvage yard to view the wreckage.
Oh my God, it was worse than I thought. I will attach some pictures to
show you guys.

The damage to the equipment is still indeterminable until we start
plugging things in. There were heavy cases shattered, lights broken,
cabinets flipped upside down and on top of each other, etc.

We were able to get everything in pieces into a uhaul truck and sent
to our storage facility back home. We were fortunate to have Ken and
Richard Kendrick come to our rescue. Richard was filling in for Sam on
these dates while Sam was out of the country. Richard went way beyond
the call of duty in helping us, and we owe him dearly. Ken also helped
save the day immensely. Richard brought us to Shreveport where our
label president and amazing friend Alan Traylor picked us up and
brought us home.

The next few days were filled with rest, aches, pains, but more
importantly blessings. Seeing my little boy when I got home was all I
needed to understand how incredibly fortunate we all were. If the
slightest change in events had occurred, he may not have had a Dad
anymore and my wife made a widow.

I remember lying on the hospital bed and getting bombed with texts and
emails and calls from so many people that all I could think was "It
happened an hour ago. How does everyone know what went down so
quickly?" I can't stress enough how much it meant to see people from
all over the world wishing us well and caring about us, including
reaching out to our families as well.

A few people wanted to make sure I had not lost any fingers or an arm.
I can proudly say they are all intact. This event was divinely
interrupted, and I believe wholeheartedly that God intervened. Thanks
again to everyone. I guess the man upstairs knows I still have at
least 10 more albums to write.

Vintage Concert Recording By Quicksilver Messenger Service 'Live At The Old Mill Tavern – March 29, 1970' To Be Released By Purple Pyramid Records – August 27, 2013

Purple Pyramid Records will be releasing on CD a vintage concert recording of legendary San Francisco psychedelic jam band Quicksilver Messenger Service titled 'Live At The Old Mill Tavern – March 29, 1970' on August 27, 2013. Packaged in a sleek digi-pack, the CD features a rare performance by the newly formed 6-piece line-up, playing several new songs and old favorites.

By early 1970, Dino Valenti, a veteran of Quicksilver's earliest incarnations, had returned to the frontline of the group. Touring constantly, the band were riding high from the success of their third album 'Shady Grove', released just a few months previously. Says Gary Duncan, "Live shows were our bread and butter. We didn't sell a lot of records like some of the other groups... But we played a lot of shows – constantly."

From the CD liner notes by famed writer Dave Thompson: "The six-piece band – Dino Valenti, Gary Duncan, John Cippolina, David Freiberg, and Greg Elmore – had only been playing together a few months, since New Year at the Fillmore rang in this new decade, and they are blazing tonight. Fiery and more fiery still...waiting in the wings for encore time was harmonica legend Jimmy Cotton, whose eponymous Blues Band was kicking the crap out of more or less every band it came up against in concert. Apart from Quicksilver... There's a lot of live Quicksilver material out there, and that is how it should be. The records are great but, as all the members have said, it was live that the Messenger Service really smoked, and the live tapes that truly mark the life and times that they lived so well. This recording punches all of those buttons, and a whole bunch more besides!"

Tracks include:

The Truth
Mona
Baby Baby
Rain
Mojo

Blues Jam #2 feat. James Cotton

Gypsy Chief Goliath join Pitch Black Records.

PITCH BLACK RECORS is pleased to announce the addition of GYPSY CHIEF GOLIATH into its artist roster.

Known globally as a stoner metal band, Canadians GYPSY CHIEF GOLIATH incorporate three guitar players and a harmonica player giving them a blues edge to their heavy groove. Thin Lizzy meets Black Sabbath, with subtle elements of modern heavy metal here and there, this is a "heavy blues" band that wavers on the edge of metal, stoner, doom and classic rock.

GYPSY CHIEF GOLIATH have achieved a lot in their tenure as a band, they have toured extensively for many years and they have acquired a large fan base. Handling the reins of GCG is quite possibly one of Canada's hardest working musicians; Al the Yeti Bones, who has previously worked with bands such as The Mighty Nimbus, Georgian Skull and Mister Bones. Al had this to say in regards to working with Pitch Black Records:

"We're really excited to be setting in stone the future roots of GCG with Pitch Black. They're a badass record label who have an extremely great work ethic that I admire a lot. We're all huge fans of the European metal scene and I just knew this label was going to be home when we first made contact. We've worked really hard on a new album called New Machines of the Night and it was recorded straight to analogue and we can't wait to unleash it on the world through Pitch Black Records."

"New Machines of the Night" is the band's second studio album and it's due for release worldwide on October 8th, 2013 on CD and digital.

GYPSY CHIEF GOLIATH are:
Al the Yeti Bones – vocals, guitar

OBLIVION SUN was formed by FRANK WYATT and STANLEY WHITAKER from the ashes of the legendary 70s prog band HAPPY THE MAN.  Though HtM had reformed in 1999, practical considerations made it difficult for the band to create, rehearse and record.  The result was that all the new material that Stan and Frank were writing was in danger of never being heard if it had to wait for a HtM release.  The solution was OBLIVION SUN, which formed in 2006.

OBLIVION SUN's first record was released in 2007.  (The first edition of the album was a "ProgDay Edition" that was only available at the band's performance at ProgDay 2007). While comparisons were immediately made to HtM, the debut clearly established OBLIVION SUN as a band with its own identity and voice, and Stan and Frank as musicians who still had a lot to say musically.  At ProgDay 2013, OBLIVION SUN will be featuring it's new release, The High Places, as well as material from the debut and some classic HtM.

OBLIVION SUN (US) will join HERD OF INSTINCT (US), MIRIODOR (Canada), THANK YOU SCIENTIST (US) and SIMAKDIALOG (Indonesia) at ProgDay 2013, the nineteenth edition of the world's longest running progressive rock festival.  ProgDay 2013 will take place on Saturday, August 31st, and Sunday, September 1st, at Storybook Farm in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  For more information, and to hear music from all of this year's bands, please visit us at www.progday.net.

Atlanta Prog Ensemble The SixxiS To Open For The Winery Dogs Upcoming European Tour In Support Of New CD Release

Music fans and critics alike are buzzing with excitement about the news of Atlanta prog ensemble The SixxiS opening for Mike Portnoy's new band The Winery Dogs upcoming European tour in September 2013. The SixxiS are touring in support of their recently released self-titled CD, which has been garnering major attention worldwide! After their first successful tour of Europe as direct support for classic rock legends Wishbone Ash, The SixxiS are gearing up for their second tour, in which they will play 15 shows in 8 different countries spanning Western Europe (England, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal).

"The SixxiS are amazing musicians whose music has progressive elements with instant melodies. They are proving to be great travel companions and rock hard, as our opener on the dates. They are a great bunch of guys and they are making us appreciate just how lucky we all are to enjoy this life." - Andy Powell of Wishbone Ash

Says founding member and lead vocalist Vladdy Iskhakov, "The European tour with Wishbone Ash was our first tour overseas. We could not have asked for a better band to be an opener for. They were compete gentlemen, and really helped us through many things we had encountered on the road. We did our best to learn as much as we could from them, because, after all, they have been around for a very long time. I think we formed a great bond and mutual respect for each other, not only as professional musicians, but as people. Their fans were unbelievable! The response we got was amazing!"

What started as a collaboration of different musicians in June 2006 became a powerhouse band consisting of world class musicians. The SixxiS, initially the brainchild of the lead singer, Vladdy Iskhakov, exhibit a wide range of musical influences ranging from classic, jazz and rock music coated in a powerful, heavy, seductive and emotional shell of sound reminiscent of Rush, Muse, Soundgarden, System of a Down, Kings X and Alice In Chains. Due to the musical prowess of the band members, the trio are able to toy with time signatures and syncopation, to grasp the magnetism of robust dynamics, and to focus on the individual mastery of each respective instrument while continuing to be a cohesive whole. The lyrics demand attention from listeners, as they are messages of a soul crying out for spiritual awakening and awareness. The combination of haunting melodies, soaring vocal harmonies, distorted guitars, and a truly 'powerhouse' rhythm section of drums and bass make the SixxiS sound unique and unforgettable!

After quietly finishing their first full-length independent album entitled 'Believe', The SixxiS quickly caught the attention of Grammy Award winning producer Malcolm Springer, who produced their new CD at Warner Brothers Studios in Nashville. In June 2012, the band signed with manager Tony Conway (Garth Brooks, Dixie Chicks, George Straight, etc), who secured their first international distribution deal with WBA Records, making available the band's new release at all major music outlets (iTunes, Walmart, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc). After a year of honing their live act, The SixxiS would go on to share the stage with bands like the Adrian Belew Power Trio, Winger and Buck Cherry.

"The first time I heard the song 'Believe' from the SixxiS I was immediately a fan. Strong hooks, great musicianship and a knack for poetic consonance." - Edgel Groves Jr. / InsideOut Music

The group's new CD illustrates the overall stripped down sound of the core three-piece group. Says Vladdy, "The music was produced to make us more 'mainstream' than the previous album we recorded, which was much more eclectic. Our sound has always been an enigma to those who listen to our music. Some get it immediately...some think they get it...some don't understand it at all... People generally have a hard time placing our sound...it's not alternative enough to be alternative...it's not progressive enough to be pure progressive rock...it's its own thing. Sure, there are several bands whose influence can be heard in our music, but overall it is independent." Along with the new studio recordings, the CD and bonus DVD features 3 live tracks taken from the band's performance in August 2012 at the 12th and Porter (venue) in Nashville.

The SixxiS consist of Vladdy Iakhakov (lead vocals, violin, piano, rhythm guitar), Mark Golden (bass, synth), and Josh "Jbake" Baker (drums, percussion, pads, vocals). The band are supplemented when performing live by multi-instrumentalists Paul Sorah and Cameron Allen. "The unity that music offers us is a testament to its power," Vladdy explains. "Again, coming from different lifestyles, cultures, races and religious affiliations, music is the one thing that helps unify all these experiences together and present them to our listeners as a unique blend. At our live shows, our fans really do get a first hand glimpse of who we are as individuals, and how we blend as a cohesive unit."

"Imagine Edgar Allen Poe's dark romantic stories and verse set to music – this is the ambiance created by The SixxiS." - RockOm
