PROGDAY PRESHOW on Friday Features ProgDay Alumni!

On Friday night, August 30, Local 506 will host a trio of performances by great bands that have played the main stage at past ProgDays:

• HALF PAST FOUR (ProgDay 2010) -
First band of the evening will be Half Past Four playing creative modern progressive rock that deftly straddles and side steps from one genre to another. The band will be performing material from the new 2013 release Good Things.

• DREADNAUGHT (ProgDay 2012) -
Dreadnaught will be up second, performing its unclassifiable mix of progressive rock, Americana, jazz, funk ...and that's just in the first tune! Dreadnaught will be showcasing material from the band's upcoming album Hard Chargin' to be released early next year.

• 3RDEGREE (ProgDay 2009) -
Finishing off the evening's performances will be 3RDegree.  Often compared to bands like IZZ and Echolyn, 3RDegree performs its "challenging music to play with a memorable, singable calling card," featuring material from last year's critically acclaimed The Long Division.

ProgDay 2013 is the 19th edition of the longest running progressive rock festival in the world.  The festival will be held on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, at Storybook Farm, Chapel Hill, NC.  Confirmed acts for this year include MIRIODOR (Canada), SOUND OF CONTACT (US), THANK YOU SCIENTIST (US) and SIMAKDIALOG (Indonesia). Psych-Space Rockers Sons Of Hippies To Release Highly Anticipated New Album On Cleopatra Records – July 16, 2013

Florida-based Psych-Space rockers, Sons Of Hippies, take flight on the backs of mythical, winged beasts to bring you Griffons At The Gates Of Heaven, the band's newest and most ambitious recording to date, available July 16 on Cleopatra Records. Mixed by legendary Seattle producer Jack Endino (Nirvana, L7) and mastered at Abbey Road Studios, the album fearlessly synthesizes four decades of rock with heavily echoed, neo-Surf guitar, sinister mellotron and crunching power chords. "Rose," the album's second single, has achieved extensive support at radio, debuting on KROQ's "Rodney On The ROQ" program earlier this month as well as landing on CMJ's Top 200 chart. Simultaneously, the band has been touring across the eastern states, including several special engagements with UK prog legends Nektar.

Conceived by the spiritual union of guitarist/vocalist Katherine Kelly and drummer Jonas Canales amidst the good vibes of the Bonnaroo Music Festival, Sons Of Hippies began their journey in 2008, adding bassist David Daly to the fold in 2011. Together the trio conquered the Florida music scene, earning accolades from audiences and critics alike including honors from their local alternative weekly Creative Loafing. True to their name, the band struggles to maintain the hopeful humanism of their '60s forebears while living in today's alienating post-modern society. "I have always been drawn to ideas of perception versus reality," says Katherine, "Humans live to tell stories to each other. But what happens in translation is often such a mutation of the truth that we become ideas of ourselves instead of just ourselves. I want our music to remind people to come back to themselves."

But the band isn't all ponderous philosophy - the first official video promoting Griffons, "Spaceship Ride," is a musical peyote trip back to child-like innocence, while the video for "Rose" cheekily sends-up '70s exploitation flicks with the band themselves cast as the surprised victims of 3 blood-lusty females. As UK magazine Vive Le Rock enthused in their review of Griffons "Psychedelia just got sexy."

Legendary vocalist Jon Anderson, YES's singer/songwriter for 35 years along with his successful work with Vangelis, Kitaro, and Milton Nascimento, will be performing special engagements in the UK, Finland and Sweden in August 2013. The shows promise to deliver an exciting mixture of material from Jon Anderson's prolific solo career, collaborations with Vangelis and classic YES songs, along with new compositions, highlighted by humorous and enlightening stories told by Jon.

Gordon Giltrap and Oliver Wakeman – Ravens & Lullabies (2013)

This is the first electric album from Giltrap in many years.

On Ravens & Lullabies he has partnered with Oliver Wakeman and together they have concocted a delightful semi-prog rock record. By semi, I mean if you like Alan Parsons Project and Kayak, then this is right up your street.

If you are into really progressive 'progressive' rock, though, no worries, there is still plenty to enjoy: the musicianship and song writing is first class.

Having said all that, the album is a bit good cop, bad cop: band piece, solo piece, band piece, solo piece.

Anyway, it kicks off with its best song, the almost Asia like Moneyfacturing, which has a great guitar and synth solo and a memorable chorus to boot.

The next track is the solo guitar and piano of Fiona's Smile, then there is another full band track, then another acoustic piece. And so on.

Is This The Last Song I Write is the longest, most progressive piece. It is the one that gets the most praise and a pretty good tune it is, too, despite the annoying navel-gazing lyrics.

Throughout the album, though, Giltrap's acoustic and electric playing is superb (wish there was some more electric guitar, though!) and Wakeman is, well, a Wakeman!

Ravens and Lullabies is a good, solid album, well worth owning. However, it's not nearly as good as Fear of the Dark and Perilous Journey, Mr Giltrap's best electric records.

FB 1964 - "The Fearless Vampire Killers"

The "Fearless Vampire Killers" Album is a complete remake / cover-version of the 1967 movie-soundtrack "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (Roman Polanski, Jack Macgowran, Sharon Tate). The original score was composed by "Krzysztof Komeda", who also scored "Rosemary's Baby". It was a mixture of classical- , progressive- and horror-movie-soundtracks. The new version combines original parts with very heavy additions to it. The album includes 15 tracks based on the original music, plus citations that are integrated into the tracks. For example: Iron Maiden´s "Transsylvania" or Mozart´s "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik", plus some new parts that I have composed. A lot of guest musicians have participated in this project, like Jeff Loomis, John Norum, Jennifer Batten and more. It was not easy to realize this project, because I did not have the original notes and couldn't find them on the net. So, I listened to the old original-soundtrack and had to transcribe the songs myself. The Album was recorded and produced at "Bornkamp Studio" (2008-2012) and mixed and mastered by "Torsten Sauerbrey" at "metalsound-studio".

Guitar legend Steve Hunter, best known for his work with Alice Cooper, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, David Lee Roth, Jack Bruce and Aerosmith, has a new CD released, 'The Manhattan Blues Project', featuring an all-star guest line-up! This is Steve's fifth solo album and is a culmination of his love of the Blues and New York City mixed with his love of melody and "Tone Poems". After recording and touring with Alice Cooper in 2011, he decided to get off the road to write and record. He thought it would be cool to have some guest players join him and was overjoyed and humbled at the willingness of those he asked to contribute to this project. Many of the guests he had not worked with before and most had a very different style of playing to himself. There are two cover tunes but this album is mainly new material written, played and produced by Steve. He was very happy to also include a short composition by his friend Jason Becker, called "Daydream By The Hudson".

Circadian Pulse is a progressive metal band from Melbourne, Australia. As far as progressive metal bands go, their influences include the usual classic ones such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning and Symphony X. Beyond this, as musicians and music listeners, they have a wide range of influences. Using this classic progressive metal basis and their varied interests and influences as a starting point, their aim is to create music that is eclectic, proficient, conceptually interesting and incorporates some experimentation.

The band was formed in early 2008 by bassist Simon D'Alfonso. Apart from a passion for creating and playing this type of music, another motivating factor in forming the band was a desire to contribute to the under-represented progressive metal scene in their native Australia.

In the middle of 2008 guitarist Bzen Byanjankar joined the band and the unit continued to developed material. Seeking a second guitarist, the band was able to secure Stephen Stergiadis around the turn of 2008. 2009 was spent casually rehearsing and working on material whilst trying to complete the band line-up.

It took quite some time for the band to find a vocalist, but around the middle of 2010 Adrian Sofia successfully auditioned for the band. Whilst not having a permanent member drummer, with the help of temporary and hired drummers, the band was able to have their first gig in December of 2010 and subsequently gig throughout 2011.

The band had been operating without a keyboardist for quite some time. Whilst they were able to function without a keyboardist, ultimately the vision was for Circadian Pulse to be a band with a keyboardist to contribute to their progressive metal sound and add sonic richness to their music. So fortunately at the start of 2012 they welcomed keyboardist Dave Holley to the fold.

With an almost complete band (minus a drummer), the band embarked upon recording their debut EP throughout 2012. Slowly but surely the EP was recorded and released in December 2012. Totalling around thirty minutes, it contains a collection of five tracks that were developed variously over the previous few years. It was recorded and produced by the band's guitarist Steve Stergiadis, who is a qualified sound engineer operating from his home studio.

One hindrance for Circadian Pulse as a developing band has been the lack of a permanent member drummer throughout their time. Fortunately this was rectified very recently in 2013 with the addition of Tommy O, a young drummer extraordinaire from New Zealand.

Circadian pulse is a band contributing to the progressive metal tradition whilst offering some novel elements in their own unique way. With a recently completed full line-up, 2013 will see the band playing more live shows, promoting themselves and starting to work on their first full album.

Hypnotheticall: two important gigs during summer

Hypnotheticall will take part in prestigious Masters Of Rock in Vizovice, the biggest open-air festival in Czech Republic! The italian band will perform on July 12th at 5:10 PM on the Alfedus Stage. The festival will feature artists such as Devin Townsend, Moonspell, Yngwie Malmsteen, Rage, Primal Fear, Grave Digger, Dragonforce, The 69 Eyes and Avantasia. On August 23rd, the band will also play at Isola Rock Festival, taking place at Isola Della Scala, Verona, Italy.

RPWL reveals the cover artwork of their forthcoming live DVD

As previously announced, German art/prog rock band RPWL returns in September with a brand new release. Their new live DVD entitled „A Show Beyond Man and Time"  features a special show recorded earlier this year at Wyspiański Theater in Katowice, Poland, which was also the last complete performance of their most recent album "Beyond Man and Time" in Europe. The multi‐media live presentation of this concept album with its stunning show elements and musical virtuosity – expect an outstanding experience! In addition to the songs from „Beyond Man and Time", the show includes several „RPWL classics" and some surprises in the band's live set like "Roses" - one of the band's most popular songs performed together with Ray Wilson (ex-Genesis, Stiltskin)! The DVD will also include bonus materials such as an interview with band members.

The release date of „A Show Beyond Man and Time" DVD is scheduled for September, 9th in Poland, September, 25th in Europe and October, 15th in USA (via MVD). The material from „A Show Beyond Man and Time" will be available in two formats: DVD and double CD DG. Full details to be announced soon.

 

The music of this German band definitely has its own style – modern yet also drawing from the best traditions of the prog-rock genre. All in all - brilliant compositions, catchy melodies, mature and intriguing sound!  The band was formed in 1997 in Freising, Germany as a Pink Floyd cover band. After three years they started creating their own music, based on their experience from their cover band era. Glorious reviews after the release of their debut album "God Has Failed" (2000), a successful tour through half of Europe, and appearances at various festivals left no doubt - the band had become a must-hear of the progressive/symphonic rock genre. In march 2002, RPWL released a follow-up album entitled "Trying to Kiss the Sun". With this album, the band emphatically shed off their reputation of a Pink-Floyd cover band and created a sound of their own. The band toured extensively through Germany and Europe, taking their shows to a new level with a quadraphonic sound system, which made their already huge live sound even more gigantic. Having published their album in the USA and South America, RPWL gained fans and recognition all over the world. In the next years, the band released the following studio albums: "Stock" (2003), „World Through My Eyes" (2005), "The RPWL Experience" (2008). „Beyond Man and Time" (2012) is their most recent album and it will make for the main part of their performance at Wyspiański Theater in Katowice.

Lizard records and CIVICO 23 a new Italian Band Name and their new album.

A new young guest for "Locanda del Vento" (Lizard records side label) with a strong and magical hard-progressive sound:
CIVICO 23 is a new band from Rome, which has learned the fantastic historical lesson of Il Biglietto per L'Inferno, Museo Rosembach (about the actual prog band the closer reference can be Il Bacio della Medusa). "Siero Progressivo" is the debut album, with a special pathos and new energy.

The histrionic singer Massimo Joe Galatone and all the musicians (2 guitars, keyboards, drums, bass) create epic songs like musical tales, talking about minstrels, knights, dragons, pirates, interstellar trips, apocalictic visions, ghosts.

Every track is a compelling hard-prog composition, with excellent riffs and nice vintage atmospheres (keyboards are important for a good balance of the sound), with fascinating slow-breaks in seventies style. Impact, epic tension, magic!

Civico 23, a new italian prog name, already more than a promise!!

J. D. Overdrive - another video available on YouTube // interviews, review cds

J. D. Overdrive, one of the best Southern Metal bands from Poland, released their  sophomore studio album titled “Fortune Favors The Brave” in late May (July, 2nd in US).  And today you can watch another video clip promoting the album. “Shadow of the Beast” is available on Metal Mind Productions’ official channel on YouTube in THIS location.

 

Wojtek ‘Suseł’ Kałuża, vocals comments: "This kind of concept suits ‘Shadow of the Beast’ very well - it's a slow, rather dark song and old school horror flicks are a perfect theme for a video for a track like this. A similar concept was used not long ago by Deftones, except their theme was old western movies. We knew from the get go that horror films was the only option for us - the older and campier, the better (laughs). We had lots of fun gathering the material for this video, got to watch many forgotten classics (laughs)."

The band was formed in 2007 when guitarist Michal “Stempel” Stemplowski (along with drummer Luksus and bassist Kuba) recruited vocalist Wojciech “Susel” Kaluza for his new rock project dubbed Jack Daniels Overdrive. They self-released their debut EP called “Pure Concentrated Evil", which received a bunch of great reviews in various webzines and magazines. They played their very first show supporting Jesus Chrysler Suicide (a legendary Polish act) and the following two opening for Beatallica. In the meantime the band experienced two line-up changes, welcoming in their ranks drummer Lukasz “Jooras” Jurewicz and bassist Lukasz “Peo” Pomietło. In March 2009 they were given the honor of performing in Krakow with the living legend of stoner metal – Phil Anselmo's Down. In the following months came the inevitable – they changed their name to J. D. Overdrive to avoid legal problems with the Tennessee tycoon. And just when they thought that nothing can surprise them – on March 9th, 2011 they opened for Zakk Wylde's Black Label Society in Warsaw. After over three years of gathering experience at numerous live shows and sharpening their material, J.D. Overdrive were proud to release their debut album. The album entitled "Sex, Whiskey & Southern Blood" was released by Metal Mind Productions in June 2011. This year and the following brought more live performances and the band supported such acts as Blood Ceremony, Whitesnake and Soulfly. Now, in 2013 they are ready to return with their new album! The mixing and mastering duties for the album was held by Piotr Gruenpeter who's best known for his work with the post-black phenomenon THAW, as well as from bands Searching For Calm and Sun For Miles.

Guitar Legend Steve Hillage Releases Rare 'Live In England 1979' CD/DVD Set!

Steve Hillage is widely considered a guitar innovator, and is associated with the Canterbury scene, working in experimental domains since the late 1960s. Besides his critically acclaimed solo recordings, along with Gong, Steve has been a member of the ensembles Khan and System 7. Much to the excitement of his fans worldwide, Gonzo MultiMedia UK has released 'Steve Hillage – Live In England 1979' on a CD/DVD set!

Says Steve, "This was a great performance from another fine period of my band in the late '70s with John McKenzie on bass and Andy Anderson on drums."

Steve Hillage first came to prominence as a member of the multi-national rock band Gong. Steve appeared on successful albums such as 'Angels Egg', 'You' and his final album with the band 'Shamal'. Steve recorded his first solo album in 1975 entitled 'Fish Rising'.  This album was recorded whilst still a member of Gong. Shortly after however, Steve and his partner Miquette Giraudy left Gong embarking on a career that continues to this day under the name System 7.
 
In 1976 Steve recorded the album 'L', which was produced by Todd Rundgren. The album was a huge success and Steve subsequently formed the first Steve Hillage Band, which included former Jethro Tull drummer Clive Bunker and future Camel bassist Colin Bass. The band made its live debut at the Hyde Park concert staged by Queen in September 1976.

From 1976 to 1979, Steve Hillage released several critically acclaimed albums and toured the world. Following the live debut of a new line-up, the Steve Hillage Band toured extensively throughout 1979. This CD/DVD set captures a stunning performance by this great line-up of the band! Playing with Steve are the ever-present Miquette Giraudy (synthesiser, vocals), John McKenzie (Bass, Vocals), Andy Anderson (Drums) and Dave Stewart (2nd Guitar). This is the line-up that recorded some of the live tracks and the studio side of Steve's 1979 release Live Herald. The studio tracks from 'Live Herald' eventually came out on CD as part of the album 'Open'.

The track listing to this historic 1979 performance from the Steve Hillage Band includes: "Salmon Song", "Unzipping the Zype", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", "1988 Aktivator", "Unidentified Flying Being", and "It`s All Too Much".

Bonus tracks on the CD include "Hurdy Gurdy Glissando" (live 1977) and "Electrick Gypsies" (live 1977), recorded with the 'L' tour line-up.

Bonus material on the DVD includes two short promo videos for "Radio" and "Light in the Sky" (from the album 'Motivation Radio') and a more recent in-depth interview with Steve and Miquette.

Steve currently sees his System 7, Mirror System, and Steve Hillage Band entities as operating in parallel and has been writing some new rock-based material for a possible Steve Hillage Band album for release in 2014/15. MIRIODOR Performs at ProgDay 2013!

With a musical legacy that spans almost thirty years, Miriodor is one of the finest progressive bands to ever emerge from Canada. The band's debut immediately established an individual musical vision that has continued to evolve and mature with each release.  Whether this Canterbury/Experimental/Avant band is romping through whimsical, pleasant and accessible lands or turning its attention to more angular, darker, heavier territory, the trip is always intriguing and the musicianship is always jaw-droppingly proficient.

MIRIODOR will be making an exclusive and rare US appearance at ProgDay 2013 in celebration of its eighth album, Cobra Fakir, to be released at the end of the summer. The performance will feature material from the new release as well as favorites from the past.
