The Overlords' curious 2000 debut had some in the psych/prog underground wondering whether they were listening to a new group or some overlooked gem from the "glorious seventies." It didn't seem to matter, as the Overlords were labeled contemporaries of early Genesis, Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, King Crimson and Rush rather than latter-day imitators.
The Overlords vanished almost as soon as they appeared, leaving more questions than answers. The sessions for their ambitious follow-up release – abandoned after creative differences tore the band apart – were thought destroyed by engineer error. With their first album long out of print, the Overlords seemed no more than a fleeting if interesting footnote in the first wave of the psych/prog resurgence. But in 2010, the original masters were located and the Overlords re-united, enlisting Rodney Mills to re-master the best of their first two recording sessions to complete their long-delayed vision of an album that conjures epic dreamscapes in both sound and space.
The result is Sonic Astronomy – the very best of the Overlords' original recordings.
