SPACE ROCK INVASION CONCERT COMES TO DVD ON AUGUST 14
Nektar formed in 1969, and earned a cult following for its psychedelic, spacey approach. In the mid-1970s, Nektar attracted attention and a growing fanbase in America with several concept albums, like REMEMBER THE FUTURE and DOWN TO EARTH, and a uniquely visual live show. The band continues to perform today, featuring original guitarist and vocalist Roye Albrighton, to a fervent and developing audience, and remains an influence for "space rock" artists around the world.
A collective of eight or so Europeans led by Joel Vandroogenbroeck (who played flute and organ) became enigmatic art rock band called Brainticket. Incorporating such unique instruments as zither, table, and using generators and various sound effects, Brainticket released three albums in the late 1960s/early 1970s, and in various configurations, several more records through the years. The Space Rock Invasion tour was the first time Brainticket performed in America.
While a prolific solo artist and member of other gigging and recording bands, Huw Lloyd-Langton is best known as the guitar player for Hawkwind. Hawkwind is one of the earliest space rock groups, hailing from England. Throughout its forty+ year career, the band pushed and sometimes eliminated the boundaries between psychedelic, classic, and punk rock. Lloyd-Langton's innovative guitar work is a cornerstone of that sound.
The Space Rock Invasion bill was the first time these three progressive space rock pioneers ever shared the stage, and Cleopatra Records' first foray into tour promotion. "We brought these three bands to America, starting at B.B. Kings in New York City," explained label V.P. Tim Yasui, "and ending three weeks later at the Key Club in Los Angeles." With three HD cameras, state-of-the-art audio, and psychedelic images from lighting technician Jim Lascko, the live concert turns into an epic at-home experience.
SPACE ROCK INVASION is available on iTunes, amazon.com, and at your favorite record store. The 2-DVD set is $17.98.
