When heavy metal bands began to incorporate elements of progressive rock into their music, it created a huge mess. The public and the critics also began to classify as "progressive" any band playing technical music with a lot of notes.
In some ways, this confusion misread the genres "progressive rock" and "progressive metal" that always meant much more than just technique and excess of notes.
No rooms for errors, the proposal of the Brazilian band IMAGERY is precisely to rescue the essence of progressive rock made in the 70s.
"This rescue is just a matter of musical preference, we do not want to prove anything to anyone," explains guitarist and vocalist Joceir Bertoni. "We're fans of metal bands like Megadeth and Pantera, we like the attitude of heavy metal. We're also fans of Emerson Lake & Palmer and Gentle Giant. But in the progressive rock what fascinates us most is not the technical skills of the musicians, but the methods of composition, how the songs develop, it's subtlety and poetry."
Progressive rock is not only synonymous of long songs and several changes of beats, characteristics considered non-commercial.
Some people forget, but unlike today, progressive rock was a very popular genre in the '70s. Bands like Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Yes and Genesis played to packed stadiums!
"The contemporary rock overvalued the image," adds Joceir. "We are inspired by these great masters of the past that made rock with content. I hope we can inspire people to hear music made with heart and soul again, as in the 70ths. There will come a day when people will get tired of this 'wardrobe music'. "
IMAGERY is still working on the pre-production of its debut album. The album is expected to reach the stores during the second semester.
